Question Apple Remote Desktop 2 - what's the deal?

Quick one for you Mac gurus

Got ARD2 installed on my Mac at work.

Got about 12 Macs on an airport network, but in no way set up (they use it for a bit of internet and to access the laser printer)

I've left the manual at work, and was hoping whether or not you guys could basically give me the low down on how to set it up.

I want the facility to look at their screens and if necessary communicate with them (basically we have an internet mis-use issue at work, and our IT dept won't support us because we're Mac )

Is this easy to set up or not? If yes, what's the process?

pretty simple if:

1) the macs (clients) are running OSX?

It dosent matter what network protocol they are running, airport or ethernet but obviously ethernet will be quicker and give you more "experience" as in screen resolution, speed etc.

But the straight and easy way to do this is as follows:

1. make sure ARD (latest version) is installed on the controlling mac.
2. go to each client mac and turn on (in sharing prefs) Apple Remote desktop and remote login (not needed but what the hell just adds a bit more).
3. check that their firewall settings are set to allow remote login via remote desktop
4.they have installed the latest version of remote desktop client installed (this comes as part op the ARD installer)

Then fire up ARD controller, go into local network and all your clients will pop up. do some tweeks on network settings etc and thats it.
You now have choices on how to control, observe, interact, share files etc

see this link for advice and support on controlling both osx and os9 macs

Other alternatives are Timbuktu from Netopia which is cross platform sharing and controling software... Also supports 9 and X
Or VNC, I used VNC to control my colocated Mac web server and could do so from my mac at home or a PC on a clients site. Search for 'Chicken of the VNC' - (Don't even ask me why....)

ARD is easy to use, just use the observation mode then use the interact mode to send them messages like i do or just randomly quit their programs

All set up - what a GREAT piece of software

There are few software packages that change the way I work, but this is definitely one of them

ARD is pretty good, but if I recall correctly, it won't work over subnets. I use VNC in house for viewing/controlling machines. OSXvnc as the server component and VNCThing as the viewer.

Red face

Yes mate - you are TOTALLY right. I thank you immensely.

I could have *sworn* that I said "thank you" -

Very sorry Tony

In all fairness, the ARD2 manual isn't exactly written for idiots (me!)
Did as you suggested and only some of the Macs were available

I then realised that I had to go into the sharing folder, access ARD properties and turn it on for the users.

Yes, it's obvious now, but I assumed that would be done in the script installer I wrote on the master machine

After all, I only want it so that I can monitor students' activity on the Macs and maybe perform the updates/turn the machines off without going in the room etc

Sorted now.

Again "Thanks"

All you want now is some nice authenthenticated logon/desktop security/software distribution. I wonder who could possibly work for a company that develops such software?

Lol very funny, and oh so true! I best get a "Authorised Advertiser" banner as I'm sure everyone on here, ie; a Car related BBS, *needs* an enterprise level network administration solution for Macintosh computers
