Sounds like it has a virus or trojan on it. My stepson's has a similar problem and it ain't easy to fix. Well I ain't sorted it yet anyway.

Good luck.

Question

Can't you replace the poorly drive with the spare one, re-install Windows from scratch, then fit the old one as a D drive and copy the data you want to save?

SS,
  • REMOVE the faulty drive.
  • Replace it with the SPARE.
  • Install Windows FROM SCRATCH on the SPARE drive
  • As furrydice79 also says, install a good AV program on the new system (the one on the SPARE drive).
  • When you are happy with the new system (on the SPARE drive), re-insert the FAULTY drive as an ADDITIONAL DRIVE.
  • Boot the new (SPARE) drive, and you should hopefully see the old (FAULTY) drive as a new drive letter (most probably D: ).
  • Copy the files that you want to keep from the old (FAULTY) drive to the new (SPARE) drive.
  • When you are happy that you have a working system on the new (SPARE) drive, reformat the old (FAULTY) drive to use as data storage (and thus overwriting any viruses or corrupt Windows files).
  • From this point onwards, consider storing ALL of your data on what was the faulty drive, so if Windows gets broken, you simply re-install without having to copy data around.
  • Think seriously about backing up your data on a regular basis, so you don't end up in this situation again

hehe you cant get a virus 'on the motherboard' Well the bios could be corrupted but very rare and as the system booted it wouldn't be that.

Did you remove the old drive before installing on the new one?

Maybe it's the IDE cable (Hard Drive Data Cable' that's at fault).
Can you change this for another one?

Try removing hardware and see if it makes any difference. Run with one stick of ram for instance, etc, etc.

If you are still stuck mate, you can send me your "broken drive" and i will try and recover your data and then i shall burn it to DVD or CD for you and send it back.

This really is not a big job.

When you get your new machine also get Norton Ghost or similar and create regular backups of your drive to DVD or external/removal drive.

Saves all this crap your going through.
