why dont you use the other drive to install a frsh copy of windows and disconnect the drive with all yer important files on,,,then once you have the frsh copy of xp running, install good a/v and introduce the poorly drive back to your pc

- REMOVE the faulty drive.
- Replace it with the SPARE.
- Install Windows FROM SCRATCH on the SPARE drive
- As furrydice79 also says, install a good AV program on the new system (the one on the SPARE drive).
- When you are happy with the new system (on the SPARE drive), re-insert the FAULTY drive as an ADDITIONAL DRIVE.
- Boot the new (SPARE) drive, and you should hopefully see the old (FAULTY) drive as a new drive letter (most probably D: ).
- Copy the files that you want to keep from the old (FAULTY) drive to the new (SPARE) drive.
- When you are happy that you have a working system on the new (SPARE) drive, reformat the old (FAULTY) drive to use as data storage (and thus overwriting any viruses or corrupt Windows files).
- From this point onwards, consider storing ALL of your data on what was the faulty drive, so if Windows gets broken, you simply re-install without having to copy data around.
- Think seriously about backing up your data on a regular basis, so you don't end up in this situation again

Looks like its on my motherboard
started up this morning on good drive that i reformatted recently, and it kept restarting and hanging up like bad drive!.
cheers for replies though!
hehe you cant get a virus 'on the motherboard'
Well the bios could be corrupted but very rare and as the system booted it wouldn't be that.
Did you remove the old drive before installing on the new one?

When you get your new machine also get Norton Ghost or similar and create regular backups of your drive to DVD or external/removal drive.
Saves all this crap your going through.
