Default VMWare ESX

Anyone use this? I'm thinking about using it to test some load balancing configurations. Spec says minimum of two processors - would I get away with just a dual core?

(ESX is the version which loads the virtualisation env outside of a host OS)

Cheers

AFAIK you can run ESX on a single processor box. Dual core is supported in ESX 2.5.2 depending on the server. Have a look here

im a VMWare VCP !

It will run on a single processor box but is NOT supported and would probably run slowly, and also on a dual core (Version 2.5.2) but watch for systems that are/are not supported ! You also need a minimum of 2 network cards in the box (can also get round this but is not recommended !

Thanks for that. Apparently it also needs SCSI to run. Is that the case?

Yes it is true, there is one SATA raid controller that will work but again is not supported, cant remember the make and model, but know its been done. You can install ESX to a IDE drive but the virtual machines have to be on SCSI as the VMFS partitions need SCSI geometry (which the SATA card mimics)

SATA Raid cards that work (but not supported by VMWare)

Intel SRCS16
Intel SRCS14L
MegaRAID 150-4
