for playing with or production?
Start by installing 2003 paying attention to file systems, page file locations, service packs, hotfixes and DNS. then take it from there.

For the Exchange 2003, you'll need to install the ASP.Net, SMTP, NNTP and IIS services under your Windows 2003 Optional Components.
A good idea is to use the deployment wizard that comes with Exchange 2003 if you've never deployed it before. Also if you are using Small Business Server, make sure you install SP1 and SP2 for Exchange 2003, the main benefit is the increased mailbox storage limit from 16GB to 75GB.
One last final thing is, you'll need both Enterprise and Domain Administration rights for the /domainprep and /forestprep steps of the Exchange 2003 deployment. These steps extend your Active Directory with the required Exchange attributes.
Before setting up your server for Exchange 2003, make sure the partition you intend to use has plenty of disk space as the databases and logs can grow quite quickly if not managed properly, it might be worth deciding on Mailbox limits before installing it.
Good luck if you get stuck drop us a PM or post up we are a friendly enough bunch
Another VERY good resource for Exchange stuff is www.msexchange.org

Thanks for the tips folks.
I installed 2k3 server , did the AD thing , and the DNS ( obviously ! )
Installed the 2k3 server on another machine , and setup AD on that one as well. Then did the AD sites and services , and replicated the data across. Then did the exhange on the 2nd machine , and extended the schema etc via forestprep / domain prep etc.
Right thing to do ? Seems to work fine !
