Question Xbox Hard drive upgrades

Probably be answered by DJ Dunk, I expect

I currently have a 130 gig H/D in my Xbox (Maxtor that quiet noisy) and bought a 200 gig so say "quiet running" Samsung yesterday from PC world for £65.

I fitted the H/D and got like a DOS screen telling me everything was having errors :-

Hard disk
DVD
Dashboard (Exo X, i think)
ETC

BTW the LED on the front was flashing from green to red

I have an Evo X boot disk, but there isn't a format utility on it. Can anyone recommend a utility to do this? When I boot off the boot disk, it seems to start up ok.

If I fit the new H/D and boot with the boot disk, can I then change disks with a format program on? Or will I have to make a new boot disk with the format Utility on it?

What's the best method of copying all my old H/D contents onto my new H/D without loads of manual messing around please? Obviously I want to keep my games and games saves

Thanks Phill

Have you not got an option to 'Install New Drive' when you boot from the EvoX disk ! this should format and put the dashboard on the new drive.

With regards to the data, I would FTP to the Xbox prior to swapping the drive and copy off the data onto your PC. Once the new drive is installed in the Xbox just FTP and copy the data back over.

EDIT: As above

I refuse to answer now, on principal

Oh, okay then Not done this for quite some time, so there may be better options about now.

When I swapped HDD's on mine, I was using Avalaunch and Qwix to backup and reinstate my files as it transfers to/from the PC fastest using boost mode, but the process would be similar for any dash.

I first backed up all XBox drives to my PC. I used Qwix to back them up to ISO files, one for each drive, but you could just FTP the files over.

Download one of the many 'XBox Auto Installers' around such as Slayers. Boot from this to access the menus and partition the new drive in the XBox. Then, booting from the installer disk again, just FTP the files back onto the XBox drive.

Alternatively, just use the auto installer to setup your XBox to a fresh, useable state and just copy back the saved games to your new drive.

No there's no option on my boot disk!!!! Doh, think my mate lent me the Pro version, lol

Ah, so the reason the H/D isn't booting then, is due to "NO" dashboard files being present on the H/D, is that right? I understood the disk would need partitioning then formatting

I'm currently backing up my C,E,F drives onto my server. I created a folder for each drive. Do I need to do the X,Y and Z drives as well?

Once I've managed to mount the drive and get it working it should be a simple case of copying it all back over then?

Thanks Phill

Dunk,

Wow that reply didn't take long mate

Have you got a link for a good "Xbox auto installer" please? Will this provide me with an ISO to make a disc, as I'm not sure what I'm doing with Xboxs

Cheers Phill

You're going to need a slayer disc then, this will partion and format the drive for you.

Available from here

I would be tempted to backup all the drives ( no harm in doing this )

Yep, that'll do the trick nicely. Don't worry about X,Y & Z, they are just cache partitions.

Right have got the disk working. Jumper was in the wrong position

Just noticed the F drive is only 120 gig and not 200 gig. Is this a Executor version issue, or have I used older S/W to format it wrongly?

Thanks in advance, Phill

PS All my games copied across lovely

Check what bios is on your chip. You need to be using one thats LBA48 patched to support partitions over 137b. Normally in 2 flavours . . . an .06 version for a big F drive or a .67 version for the extra as a G drive.

Mine reports the bios version as unknown, great

Mate has just brought his around and drive formatted as a 200 gig. Looks like I need to update my chip firmware if I can, or get another chip

Any ideas?

Haven't checked that yet to be honest, more dramaed up that I seem to have lost 80 gig I'll check that in a minute!!

I really want the games partition to be as big as it can, as my kids got to understand how to work it

Cool

All my game saves are working fine. It has taken all night to copy my files from my PC to my Xbox....Surely there has got to be a faster way of doing this (FTP at the mo) ?

As I said before, my mates xbox has a newer chip, so am now convinced it's my chips firmware that to blame. Any thoughts?

Can I reflash the chip bios? I know I got an executor chip (ver 2 something I think)

Thanks Phill

PS these hard drives are soooo quiet

If you'd have used Avalaunch as your dash and Qwix on your PC, you'd have seen speeds up to 10,000kbps There may be other programs about now that support boost mode, not really kept up with it lately.

If your dash gives you the MD5 of your bios, you can google it to see what you currently have on the chip. You'll also find them in your evox.ini file (ROM = "EvoX 2.6",0xdd3de3542bff7b36cdb0dbe078c27fbe) if it doesn't find a match, it returns 'Unknown'. There are also other programs which will tell you what you have on the chip.

Good flashing tutorial here:

Get your bios from #xbins on efnet. If you Google for anything Xecuter related you'll find lots more tutorials.

Don't mean much to me, or does this indicate I have none of these bios versons?

Can you point me to a program that can tell me my bios version?

I'll have a look at what that link says.

Thanks mate, Phill

For someone trying to learn this is a nightmare. Done a search on google and am even more confused now....

Think I might just have to get another chip, as I'm not sure what I have fitted so flashing it is a nightmare, or am I missing something???

I thought I just needed to flash the chip with EvoX 3.03 or 3.01 and away I went
