Typically, either H.323 or SIP use a similar method for VoIP.

They both have fixed ports for call setup and call control - HOWEVER (and this tends to be the big problem, especially with noddy firewalls) they both also use dynamic ports (across a wide range) for the RTP (or voice/video content).

Hence, if you're looking at firewall requirements, you'll specifically need a firewall that supports 'statefull inspection' of the VoIP control packets to determine which dynamically assisgned ports to allow comms over.

Hopefully this helps....

... for the fixed ports, it usually is 5060 or 5061. However, the RTP will go over a dynamically assigned port.

really I thought RTP was over 8000, we are currently trialling VoIP using SIP cards and VoIP phones and I thought all the ports were static?
