what port does VoIP use?
does VoIP use a specify port?

I think it is 1720

What sort of VoIP? SIP? H323?
|
Typically, either H.323 or SIP use a similar method for VoIP.
They both have fixed ports for call setup and call control - HOWEVER (and this tends to be the big problem, especially with noddy firewalls) they both also use dynamic ports (across a wide range) for the RTP (or voice/video content). Hence, if you're looking at firewall requirements, you'll specifically need a firewall that supports 'statefull inspection' of the VoIP control packets to determine which dynamically assisgned ports to allow comms over. Hopefully this helps.... Shades |
I thought for SIP it was typically 5060
|
... for the fixed ports, it usually is 5060 or 5061. However, the RTP will go over a dynamically assigned port.

thanks for the info. very useful to know the port info of VoIP.
|
really I thought RTP was over 8000, we are currently trialling VoIP using SIP cards and VoIP phones and I thought all the ports were static?
