Default AOL Broadband and Macs - HELP!!!!!

Mate of mine is on AOL - trying to set up this up on his Mac, but has hit a brick wall in that

(a) He's not sure whether or not the G5 is seeing the modem - should it be seen in "network" under System preferences as an additional modem (next to Airport, Internal Modem etc?)

(b) What is the number for dialing AOL broadband from this modem - AOL don't seem to know, as they "don't support Mac"..........

Any help would be appreciated, as this works on his PC (inc modem), but he wants to use his Mac

Thanks in advance,

Dan

If he chooses Sys Prefs - Network then clicks on the network status pop up and chooses 'Network Port Config' then click add is there an option that sounds like the usb(?) modem?
Has he installed some drivers or does the AOL disk not have any Mac ones...

Can't help re the number - Don't use AOL.

Would it not be possible to have it rigged up to the PC and share the network connection?

Cheers Rich,

That's pretty much what he's done (nice to have it confirmed though!) AOL disk has Mac Drivers on it. And it says that it's installed, but apart from teh power light, the modem shows no signs of life.

Cant' ICS, as they machines are in two totally different buildings (house & studio)....

Anybody got any other ideas?

Ok there are various ways to do this but here's a quick and dirty one.
1.make sure he has installed the drivers from the aol cd
2.In network prefs make sure under port configurations that the right modem is selected (not internal), it should be USB modem.
3.Then launch Internet connect (purple icon) in applications.
4.Create a new connection and use the USB modem as your network adaptor
5.Setup the connection to dial AOL using the screen name and password
6.(not sure of the number)
7.Try connecting

Failing that, you can download the AOL dialer software for Mac OSX.
http://www.aol.co.uk/download/aol_macosx.html

Also Apple has a bit on their website on how to do it
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107409

You will notice though that apple suggests that you completely ignore what i wrote in the first paragraph, however i posted that cos i have seen it work

hope some or all of this helps

oh and if you really want to stay with aol get a router
oh and if you really want to make things easier, get a better isp

How old is the disk with the drivers on for his modem.

AOL upgraded there system not so long back forcing everyone to download new drivers. If its working on his normal PC it could be because he downloaded the new drivers and the drivers on the disk are the old ones.
