Default Torrents sloooow.

Note to mods, this is not about illegal file sharing so please don't delete.

Recently a a few people on a dev forum I use have posted torrents of wip/beta apps instead of direct links to the programme itself to conserve their bandwidth.

Is it just me or is BT too fecking slow to be any use? Or is it one of those things where the more I share I get faster speedyness and as I am not sharing anything I don't get a decent speed?

I'm on 1mb broadband with 512 upload and I the fastest download speed I have seen on the file I need is a massive 7.9 KiB/s.

I know I am well behind the times just getting started with BT but I've never had a use for it before.

Or, am I just thick and missing something?

I have a "friend" who has seen speeds of up to 52k but that seems to be the limit.

Is that it?!

Even at 52k I might as well go to California, pick the file up then ride home on a unicycle, I'd still be quicker.

Wait till someone shares the legal stuff you want on direct connect, and get it with DC++. I regularly see 260k/sec

Yup. I never understand how If I've got a 256k upload speed that anyone using p2p gets higher speeds than that.

You're better off using MSN Messenger.

yeah i've had that problem, I think it may be down to open outgoing ports though. Messenger goes out on port 1863 but the file share utility goes out on ramdom ports which makes sending files a pain in de butt if you've closed all outgoing ports. If 1863 is blocked it will go out on port 80 eventually, i think allowing outgoing traffic on 3 IP's that messenger uses (sorry not what they are off the top of my head) should fix the slow file send problem, no sending non licensed things though

It must be the incoming port not outgoing, as I don't run a firewall!

You need to be able to make a serverless connection to the other user to get proper speed. I'm sure there's some ports you can forward - but my router only lets you do 10 forwarding rules, and I've used them all (got various servers).

yeah defo, are you sure the router doesn't have an outgoing firewall (packet filter) when ive taken the rules off mine it works ok, i think netgear for example, only allow certain things out by default, a safe option but a little restrictive.

also do you use such a package that allows a serverless secure(ish) connection, i haven't looked into them much

re the limit to download speed, I regularly see 100K download speeds, while uploading at 22K.

The reason you can see higher downloads than your upload speed is that you are downloading from multiple people at the same time, so you can get 4 x 22 downloads.(or whatever)

There are loads of sites out there explaining this - but make sure you limit your upload speed slightly (as it needs to send info out while downloading)

other tips are port forwarding and firewalls. Too much to go into here so try a search.

Yeh it depends on how popular the file(s) is your dloading, i.e how many peers and seeds are there, doing the same thing as you at the sametime. And even if you have alot of seeds and not many peers, it doesnt necessarily mean you will max out your connection, as the people sending may be capping the upload speed in their torrent clients.

Torrents suck imo
