Can you get done for downloading from Torrent web sites?
I've heard its possible to download latest films from torrent websites (search engines).
I know this is probably illegal, but has anyone been done for it? I've also heard some lawsuits have been taken out by undercover agents who upload files and then record IP address details of downloaders and then trace them.
UK specific news would be appreciated.

As soon as a new torrent is made available on one of the torrent sites millions up millions of people download them, so i cant see you getting caught to be honest, also if a police officer or some agency uploaded a torrent and you downloaded it, wouldn't that be entrapment and therefore no chance of a prosecution.

MUCH more likely to be busted for sharing lots than just downloading.
It isnt illegal to download as such, it's illegal to download and use pirated songs/films/apps

I know someone who got sent a cease and desist letter for downloading a game on bittorrent. It was genuine too, not a wind up. He deleted what he'd downloaded and didn't do it again and they left him alone.
People have been done, granted only a tiny % but they still get done. It's pretty easy to log IP's using bittorrent, and if they take you to court your ISP has to provide IP logs if summoned.
Not worth the risk IMO, besides it's a bit pikey isn't it - like shoplifting or sneaking in to the cinema through a fire exit. Still theft at the end of the day.
Of course, if you used something like Peerguardian and were connected to the net via someone elses wireless LAN, then things change a little.

There was something in the papers about a teenager who was downloading stuff music i think.. the parents didn't know until they had a fine through for a couple of thousand.. it might have been in the states though
Nope, UK..
Parents count the cost of free music | Technology | Guardian Unlimited Technology

Even if you got caught and recived a letter like that install a backdoor on your machine i.e trojan and claim someone else was using your machine as a proxy to do these acts.

And before some clever sod who has no idea of the trojan scene comes out and says well they would be able to tell what date the trojan was installed, certain trojans let you adjust the date they installed themselves, in the edit server section of the trojan.
