Who has 1mb DSL from Pipex
What speed does yours connect at? Mine says 2.2mb but I download at 140kb/s which is slightly more than 1mbit (128kb/s normally minus overheads).
What do the rest of you get?
Cheers,
Simon.

Means BT have upgraded your exchange. Most people on 1 Meg now have 2 Meg. SO should the question be
Who has 2mb DSL from Pipex
Speedtests say I can download at 211.3 KB/sec but I've only seen 140.
It was done because BT wholesale carried out the upgrade.

My understanding is that Pipex themselves throttle it back to 1mb, BT connect it at 2.2mb and Pipex set it at what speed you should be running at. Then if you upgarde from 1mb to 2mb then Pipex can upgrade you without having to pay BT again. That's what I was told anyway.

I'm still waiting to have my 512kb upgraded to 1mb with Pipex, the useless tossers I refused to pay them 15 notes to do it early when it was going to be free anyway, they said it would be done by August and I have called them and they say oh BT are way behind on the upgrades I'll be lucky if I get it by the end of the year at this rate.

In the same boat as you bravo...got an email from Pipex in March saying I'd be upgraded 'soon' and I'm still waiting. They told me on the phone that it would be by the end of July. Used to think there was no reason to move away from them but now I'm starting to think they're overpriced and unreliable so am looking around.

Me too. I'm fed up with them ripping off their existing customers by charging the same for 512kb when all their new customers get double the speed for the same money. Guess what, I sent them an email stating that and they couldn't even be bothered to reply, their customer service is astonishingly bad.
The only reason i'm with them still is because they have no ports blocked, their are no fair usage polices and no restrictions what so ever. Find me another provider with those same conditions for less money and I will move.

the 2.2mb must be the speed of the line at the exchange.
At the modem it says 2.2 but ive 1mb line. I guess that also means we've all got a good enough line to be able to get 2mb.

I'm on the 1Meg package (upgraded from 512) - just done a speed test (ADSLguide) and was disappointed to see a download rate of between 550 and 600 KBps. And an upload of 246Kbps. Should I be disappointed or is this right?

Right just been looking about this morning. And us Pipex customers are being ripped off!
I called PlusNet. For 21.99 incl vat I can have a 2mb line on their Premier package that has no fair usage policy, no download limits, no port blocking apart from 445 and 139 and static ip addresses all for 21.99 I am now going to give up waiting for BT to do the upgrade for free and pay their rip off 14.99 just so I can have 2mb at 2 quid a month less than what I am paying Pipex for a 512kb line
PlusNet were also extremely helpful on the phone, very polite and very informative - a complete contrast to those tossers at Pipex!
I've had enough of the Pipex attitude so am moving to PlusNet immediately

just to warn you, ive been informed that infact their CS are just as cr@p & infact they are now putting on limits mainly throttling p2p. They are changing this now so i would get them to confirm that in triplicate

i will double check. some guys here have premiere & are abit pissed off. I cant image if the changes wont affect them why they would be annoyed if p2p was still ok with them
Check their discussion forums, theres stuff about it there.

OK would be interested to hear, I specifically asked the sales guy if there was any throttling and he said the Premier account is completely free of all restrictions. If thats not the case from customer experiences I will be giving them a call back.

I wouldnt touch Plusnet, never got on with any of their services, including hosting.
Pipex have issues and are expensive but i've had my BB connection for 3 years now and its never failed or been slow.

PlusNet have confirmed that they have introduced traffic shaping on their Plus and Premier products. The Premier shaping is designed to be less extreme than that applied to Plus. See PN's comments on the ADSL Guide forum...

lol I just called Pipex and what a bunch of incompetent tossers they are. Basically I called sales saying I was an existing customer who have been using them for several years now but I am paying nearly 24 quid for 512kb connection yet if I was to go to a competitor I would pay less and get 4 x the connection speed plus extra benefits such as static ips. What can they offer me to keep me as a customer?
Their reply was we will never be the cheapest but we have the best network! LOL right so thats going to get you a lot of sales then isn't it?! I told him so you think that should warrant charging me more for a quarted of your competitors connection speeds? He didn't have a reply to that only to offer me a capped service on 2mb that would still work out more
How have they got any customers left?

Fatman thank you for those links. Looks like though they have realised they have messed up and have rectified it. If it is only a minor throttle of p2p on Premier accounts I can live with that. Pipex are being a nightmare, especailly with the fact I have had a line fault for a year and it took a lot of my time hassling Pipex to get it fixed. They did nothing to check it themselves and kept closing the call when it wasn't fixed. Its fixed now but for customer service I wouldn't even give them a score of 0 out of 10, they get a no score from me.

It appears that some Premier customers had their traffic shaping badly implemented, so the performance (esp. P2P) hit was much more severe than should have been. Hence there was a bigger outcry than should have been. I moved from a Zen 512kbps to PN's 'Premier up to 2Mbps' service earlier this week. I've only had a few days with the new service, but so far it's performed superbly. No complaints so far.
I've got no experience of Pipex, apart from their woeful inability to sell me a wireless connection (pre-extended reach ADSL). Their Customer Services folks couldn't even return phone calls. That did put me off considering them for my new ADSL service.

im quite happy with pipex.
Although i think in the last month or so they introduced caps, whereas previously they were unlimited.
Doubt this wil affect most people unless you go mad on p2p
