A network crossover cable will be the easiest thing without pulling things to bits.
About £1.99 for a couple of metres.
Should give you, assuming netwk cards aren't ancient, about 100mb per second - thoughput bandwith loss.

make sure they are on the same workgroup also and then if you have the admin password for both machines you can access the entire hard drive by typing run: \\compname\c$
assuming you are on xp pro as home doesnt have admin $ shares
you will be prompted for username/password
