Wireless Networking, Is it really this bad?
A couple of days ago I purchased A belkin ADSL router laptop card and a Pc card Set everything up and its rubbish!
I seem to be able to spit further than it can broadcast, I am 20 metres (max) away from the router and all I can pick up is a very weak intermitant signal. That is being sent across a couple of rooms with gyproc walls. If I move with in 5 metres or so I get a strong signal but whats the point of that?
Looks like its all going back tommorrow (thats why I bought it from PCWORLD :-) It says in the book you should achieve 200 ft indoors I am not even acheiving 50ft! I have tried it on all of the 11 channels but it makes no differance any one have ideas before I take it all back on staurday?

I had problems with the a belkin router, basically dropping the internet connection all the time, poor signals but not as bad as yours.
Moved to a Linksys wireless G 100 times better never below excellent signal anywhere in the house brick walls too, no plasterboard stuff.
Gardens 80m long works down the bottom of that to.I have my router upstairs also so that might help

Any one care to tell me whats the differance between:
WAG54G
and
WRT54G
They both seem to be broadband / Adsl routers but one is £45 (WRT54G) with 2 aerials and the other is £70 (wag54g) with one aerial. Do I need to pay the extra £25?
Linksys site is here http://www.linksys.com/international...rid=33&scid=35
Ones for Adsl2? and the other ADSL broadband, thought its better to ask on here instead of the twits that work in PCworld

I remember a few mths ago when i set up my wifi i went through about 5 different routers b4 I got one that worked well.
Started off with the linksys wireless G modem\router. I thought cos it was linksys a sub division of cisco it wud be good, connection was up and down constantly and as soon as I tried to add security it would only allow one machine to connect thats no good with 2 desktops 3 laptops and a pda.
Then went through 2 buffalo airstation, turns out this is not compatible with my ISP. then got a belkin on the advise of a guy in comet, what a muppet he was he sold me a router not modem\router which I told him I wanted, Eventually got a netgear ( the one I had tried to avoid) works a treat took me 10mins to set it up inc putting the wep security in place. sits on my windowsill in front room I can sit about 100Ft away in the backgarden with me laptop and surf away
So I am of the impression that wireless is still abit hit and miss atm

I can get a good signal from my Linksys wireless router at the bottom of my back garden (and it's a big garden) the router is situated upstairs at the front of the house too. I have read a few bad reviews of belkin wireless kit. I've had my Linksys router a month now and im really happy with it, it's only a "wireless b" router but it’s only used for browsing the net on my laptop so it doesn’t need to be any faster and for 25 quid delivered you can't go wrong.

Went from Draytek to Linksys when the *full* home network (parents ) went in. Bloody awful. Can't wait to get back on the Draytek router when i move out. WAG54G = paperweight.

Well now I am confused!
The belkin kits going back today so I will try the Linksys and if thats no good I will take that back as well, I will go through the full range of PCworld if need be!
I normally hate PCworld but if I am buying anything like this I always buy it there so I can keep taking it back and swapping it :-)

Total cost is £122 for the linksys router/modem + Pcmcia card and PCI card, I know i can get it cheaper from other suppliers but they don't offer the flexibility of pcworld. Fingers crossed!

People seem to have mixed reviews of the linksys kit but I can report nothing but success at 2 seperate sites.
I use a WRT54G at home which is located in a spare bedroom upstairs and the coverage is nothing short of perfect right around the house and garden.
Also, I am typing this now from my parents house who also use a WRT54g sitting in the conservatory on the other side of the house from the router.
Like you say, the beauty of buying from a high street retailer is the fact that you can try things out easily and just drop them back without too much hassle.

I use a Linksys WAG54G route/modem with my home Pc and Laptop and also setup the exact same setup at the GF's parents house and not had any problems with it.
You need to look at what might be affecting the signal near by. Things like TV's, washing machines, fridges etc can all interfere with the signal.
Another thing to try is make sure the ariel is pointing in the direction you mainly intend the signal to go, says this in the documentation somewhere.

I paid 36 quid for a Dlink wireless router, pcmcia card and a pci card off Ebay, works really well, for 36 quid its a mega bargain, 3 pcs reliably wirelessly connected, 'Digital Dave' is the seller.

Save yourself the heartache now and get a Draytek - the Rolls Royce of home broadband routers. You pay more, but signal strength and reliability is top notch.
You won't get Draytek from PC World, so I imagine you will go down the road of Linksys, who have revised the terrible WAG54G to a WAG54G v2 to address its shortcomings.

I've got a Linksys WRT54G, and it's a load of rubbish. Poor range, drops connections, and seems to hard reset itself back to the factory settings every few weeks (forcing me to go through and set up all the security stuff again).
Bought a Linksys pcmcia wireless card for one of my laptops at the same time, and that's just as unreliable, causing the laptop to blue screen every five minutes. Switched it to a Dlink card and all worked fine.
I would never buy anything else from Linksys, (or recommend them to anyone).

I used to use a WAG54G, but traded it in for a Netgear DG834G. I found the WAG54G to unreliable, especially in maintaining a wireless connection. The Netgear, in comparison, has been flawless. That said, my brother also has a WAG54G which he uses in 'b'-only mode without problems.
The WRT54G has a generally better reputation for reliability/stability. This is helped by the fact that the platform is 'open' and there are numerous open-source firmwares that you can flash on the device to increase the feature set, and tinker with other stuff unavailable through official firmware. See http://www.linksysinfo.org/
