Data transfer speeds with Firewire?

Data transfer speeds with Firewire?
Just got a new 4 drive Firewire box with a couple of Seagate 400 gig drives to go with my other 3 Firewire drives. I'm sorting and copying the older drives contents but the transfer speeds seem a little slow, copying around a gig a minute - roughly a 120 gig drive over in 2 hours.
I'm using the 1394a (400M) but wondered if there are any ways to speed it up? Driven from Apple Powerbook.
Thanks!
Mike

Bear in mind also that whilst USB2 achieves its standard maximum easily; IEEE1394 cant get anywhere near its standard maximum date transfer rate.
