Exchange SMTP Problems!

Exchange SMTP Problems!
Hi,
have pointed my MX record to my Exchange 2003 server and done port mapping of port 25 using my port-forwarding options in my router.
Added the domain to default recipient policy in Exchange and added/checked addresses for Active Directory users - all is good !
Done a ping for mail.abcd.co.uk and it resolves to my exchange server ... so far so good !
Send emails from outside of my domain, eg, from hotmail account and they don't show up anywhere . Tried using message tracking options in Exchange system manager but no messages from SMTP, only POP3 connector(different domain). Before I did the mx record changes I received failure reports but since the propogation has taken place it appears that hotmail etc. sends.
Why can't i see these messages on my server ??!
Have refreshed GP using gpreset command.
HELP !!

If the telnet smtp command has worked you should get..
telnet mail.domain.ext 25
You should receive a reply like:
Connected to mail.domain.ext.
HELO
MAIL FROM: mail@domain.ext
250 2.1.0 mail@domain.ext... Sender ok
Now give the recipients address:
RCPT TO: mail@otherdomain.ext
250 2.1.0 mail@otherdomain.ext... Recipient ok
DATA
blah blah blah
.
The mail server should reply with: 250 2.0.0 ???????? Message accepted for delivery
Quit
The mailserver should reply with something like:221 2.0.0 mail.domain.ext closing connection
Connection closed by foreign host.
You should get that, if you do it's been sent and has got stuck on you mail server, if you don't get that something else isn't right and it's not got to your server.

Cheers for your help mega_stream.
Tried as per your posting and all works well ! Message accepted and shows in my inbox in Outlook 2003. Tried sending from hotmail etc. and there seems to be no connection requests made to my server (used the SMTP server menu which shows current connections).
Done nslookup and set q=mx and the mail record resolves correctly to my exchange server !!
Can't work it out. My first time setting up SMTP for Exchange but I'm sure I've done everything right my end, especially as I can manually send using telnet into port 25.
My domain host is 123-reg and set up an 'a record' to my IP and then added mx record for mail. Could it be this ? Asked 123-reg support and they say I've done everything correct there.

Hi,
how do I use nslookup to check a public server server ? Have also changed the MX record of another domain (air-tel.co.uk - should point to 82.133.34.212) that sits with another provider (Cobweb Solutions). My internet connection is with Nildram and the MX change has propogated to their DNS but wanted to check elsewhere.
If somebody doesn't mind telnetting into my server to test then drop me a PM please,
thanks, Jai

ran a check on www.checkdns.net and the mail mx check fails as the request time's out !!
sent a telnet'd test on the internal lan (server sits on the same network) and the thing works fine!
How do I get the pi**ing server to respond quicker ?!
