Default Computer wont start .....please help

Ive been working on a friends pc, installing some extra 'ram'. The computer has recognised it, but when i went into the bios, it was only running as 100mhz, and not 133 which its labelled as. So i set the bios to 133, and when i saved the settings, the pc screen went black, and now i cant get into it....

i think i need to get to the bios again, but it wont let me ...the start up screens dont even come on...

Anybody any ideas on how i get get the pc to restart.

also, the monitor is ghosting ......anyone any idea on how to remedy this.??

any help is more than appreciated

hi mate , remove the new memory then there will be a jumper on the motherboard to clear the cmos. as for the monitor , unless it's an lcd then just buy another , cheap as chips.

Sometimes a monitor may display a ghosted image. Check the cable that connects the monitor to the computer. The cable should be about 1/4" in diameter. This means that each wire inside is shielded to prevent ghosting. If the wire is 1/8" inch there is a strong chance that the wire is unshielded. This is almost certainly the cause of the ghosting. Replace the cable and the ghosting should stop.

Have only just read the comments, thanx for the supplies so far.

the pc is a few years old, and runs a 1gig processor ...could it be that the motherboard only runs at 100mhz, and therefore wont support the 133, so down clocks it.

if so, but switching it to 133, have i fried anything???

or will reseting the bios cure it ??

thanx

Hi,

You wont have fried anything as it's only clock speed and not voltage, When fitting ram you should always try to ensure that the speed's match.

But I have to agree with the other coments, if you short the CMOS via the jumper on the board bios defaults will be loaded, this should enable you to get back into the bios.

The jumper is normaly next to the 3.3v cmos battery.

So just change the jumper's say to 2-3 power on / then turn off and place the jumpers how they were and power on.....

Presto ! all should be fine .

just run the memory at 100hz - it won't harm the newer stuff if you run it at slower speeds

Thanx for the help ....the reset worked.

just got to sort the ghosting .... i think it could be the 64meg graphics card is too powerful for the pc to handle. the monitor works fine without the graphics card using the onboard graphics.

Check the refresh rate for the graphics card is suitable for the monitor. Failing that try checking for updated drivers.
