Question 64-bit Windows

Anyone beta testing the 64-bit OS?

Rumours speculate a February OEM release....any thoughts on this?

Would like to try it but haven't really had time to sort the Beta out.

As long as it supports Athlon64.

Micro$oft are going to have to get a move on soon with a 64-bit version soon as AMD are doing great things with the Athlon.

The other problem is there aren't a lot of 64-bit apps...are there?

It's faster than 32b XP when there are 64 bit drivers. But it's a slug if you want to play games on it. I'd be tempted to wait a good few months after it's GA.

Why on worth would you want a 64-bit OS? They have a bigger memory imprint and are normally slower than there 32-bit counterparts. Unless your app addresses *large* amounts of memory you are better with 32-bit apps. In a year or so once the Athlon performance increases for 64-bit OS and Apps it may be worth moving but still some time off.

First used a 64-bit CPU in 1987 and OS's in 1998 so XT 64-bit is only 7 years behind.

Its not a beta, its a release candidate - this means no major code changes will happen now, its just bug fixes.

MS OS's normally reach RC3 b4 they are out.. so theres no chance of it coming out in feb.. its a couple of months off still id day.

LOL wot a load of c**p.

The 64-bit windows will be faster than the 32-bit version, some games have already been ported... UT2k4 for example is 15-20% faster in 64 bit.

The Athlons DESIGNED with 64-bit in mind, its '64-bit performance' wont improve over what it is now realy.. other than more mhz.

Im sure XP 64-bit will run just fine on my FX-55 TVM

You said it yourself, the CPU is faster in 64-bit mode but the OS is not. You are wrong about one thing, increasing mhz is not the only way to improve performance.

I didnt say its the 'only' way.. but with out core resigns etc (which would effectivly make it a different CPU) then its only going to get better by mhz (or cache).
