New PC for me - Protection???
Well old Santa worked a deal for me to get a new PC. I've just put the bits together and wanted to ask a few questions before I go on the web. It comes with Norton protection (I imagine it'll be basic - sorry not IT aware so couldn't be specific) but Santa managed to get the full McAffe suite as part of the deal. So I intend to load that on. Is there anything else you think I should download, or is it now a case of regular updates to combat the virus / trojan / pops world?

Use firefoz instead of Interweb Explorer, works a treat for me, and no pop ups
I would also get spybot search and destroy, and run that every now and again or adaware, they do the same job

Try and make sure you have (or get) Service Pack 2 for windows XP. This has a built-in firewall and most of the security patches in.
Also download..
Ad-Aware - For spyware / adware protection/removal
SpyWareBlaster - Excellent program the prevents spyware/trojans etc being installed in the first place
SpyBot S&D - Scanner and removeal tool
Uninstall the Norton you have and installed Mcafee.
That should keep you pretty safe (AS LONG AS YOU UPDATE REGULARLY)

Yep, have run Mcafee, Adaware and Spybot for ages with no problems. Make sure you set up the auto-update on the antivirus and run Adaware and Spybot before you make any online purchases so no wories about getting your card details ripped. These also need to be updated and have a button to run a web update direct from their respective websites. Also you need a firewall, use the free Zonealarm one... works fine.

Another vote here too for Mozilla Firefox. Quicker and more secure than IE and it's free - so go get it!

ZoneAlarm
I run ZoneAlarm : http://www.zonelabs.com
I use this as my firewall, has protected me a few times over the last few years.
Not sure if there is a trial/free version tho., but highly recommended from me

I have:
Sophos Anti-Virus, Which is updated everytime I connect to the network- viruses
Lavasoft Adaware SE Personal - Spyware
Mozilla Firefox - Isn't affected by dialers, pop-ups etc.
Mozilla Thunderbird - Like MS Outlook but doesn't automatically open emails.
Since I've had Firefox I haven't had to remove anything using Adaware.

Cheers for that lot guys. Will visit the relevant sites and make some choices, I'm concerned that loading certain protection may conflict with existing ones leaving with me with no protection - IT clueless.
I installed McAfee which according to the instructions went well - however no icon appeared as it said it would? However, I noticed that the Norton pre-installed protection is in place with icon on and seems fully enabled - have I c***ed it up?
