Default Asus K8V-SE Deluxe Problem

Just had a memory problem ... wanted to check it on here to see if anybody else had ahd the same problem or thinks this is a sensible approach.

Been getting a few probs ... dvd shrink not decoding discs, half life 2 sometimes displaying wrong, so decided to do a memtest.

Can back with 25 errors in 20% coverage

Now the memory I have is a matched pair of corsair 512mb xms3200 so not the cheap stuff.

Anyway ... took one out and reran the test ... no errors ... thought that I had found my problem, just to be sure I put the other one in and reran ... no errors ... ok thought they may not have been seated right .... put them both back and ..... errors !!!!!

Rereading the asus manual I saw that I did not need to use dimm 1 and 2 and could use dimm 1 and 3 .... which is were the memory is now and on reruning the test .... no errors !!!!!!!!!!

Seems like dimm 2 is knacked on the mb ?

Thoughts or suggestions before I start warrenty claims !

Dave.

Run 1 dimm in socket 2 to be sure?

Isn't it meant to be in 1 and 3 for dual channel? if your board supports it that is.

Good thought ... the machine did not boot when I tried it, but I will try is again ... the manual says it should ... so it could be more proof that dimm 2 is duff.

The mb does support dual channel, but the manual suggests dimm 1 and 3 for ddr 400 single side in one and double side in another ... for a double double combination it recommends dimm 1 and 3.

Thanks for suggesting

Dave

The dimm sockets on the motherboard should be colour coloured blue and black, use the two of the same colour

http://www.asuscom.de/pub/ASUS/mb/so...k8v_deluxe.pdf

If the DIMMs are double sided, looking at the guide they need to be placed in slots 1 and 3... From memory, I think the corsair stuff is.

ie. I dont' think the board is duff, its just due to the memory type in use.

My ABit board has 3 configurations for memory, duel channel symetric, duel channel asymetric and single channel, check the configurations out in your manual, it gives you insight into what can go into where, and make sure you actually use 1 and 2 or 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 and not 3 and 4 with just 2 sticks as this causes problems i found.

Tony

PS, also using corsair memory but the DDR2 5400 667mhz stuff, damn its fast and doom3 runs great

But if I've read the manual right, it looks like doubled sided DIMMs need to be put in 1 & 3 only. Corsair is doubled sided is it not?

As I read it it says 2 double sided for ddr400 can run as dimm 1 and 2 and dimm 1 and 3 .... lines 12 and 18 in the table on page 38?

Ah.. must of missed that one...

Motherboards can be really fussy with RAM and where it's located.
From what you've described, it looks like you've run with one stick in the slot you think is duff and all is ok, until you put two sticks of ram in.

I think you've just got a compatibility issue personally, and the sticks only work in 1 & 3. all IMHO of course.
