Default External HDD - opinions...?

Looking at an external firewire HDD and have narrowed down to two.
Going to be used for extra storage with some space assigned to backups. Won't be used for day to day files but archiving and maybe weekly backup.

Any thoughts/experience/opinions on these two and the bundled software:

Western Digital Media Centre 250GB External Firewire/USB Hard Drive
(Like the idea of the card reader too.)

Maxtor OneTouch™ II 250GB External Firewire/USB 2.0 16MB Cache

TIA.

Lacie's are nice, use a few of the bigger ones at work over FireWire 800, and they are super quick, something like 70Mb a second transfer speed.

I have a pair of the 250Gb Maxtors but I think they are version 1's. I have them daisy chained on Firewire, use one for my photos and one for backups. They are on 24/7/365 and have had them for just over a year with no problems.

They work equally well over USB 2.0, just wanted to save a USB port and as my PC has Firewire and I don't use it for anything else, might as well daisy chain them.

With the version 1's at least, you can take them apart and fit a different hard disk. I've done this a few times when I want to clone hard disks when building PCs for people, saves you opening up your PC case.

Cheers

Ian

Also worth noting, on that point that you cn buy a Firewire or USB kit that consists of a case, lead and PSU for about 40 quid, then bung any IDE hard drive of your choosing into it.
