Question what the hell does this mean??

Hi. This is the qmail-send program at yahoo.com.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following
addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

Sorry, I wasn't able to establish an SMTP connection. (#4.4.1)
I'm not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too
long.

i got this in an email and it seems to me that that someone can't be arsed to get one of my emails thru

not knowing too much about these things, is this normal?

More info? Full mail headers? Were you using webmail or POP3?

It's an auto reply designed to sound personal. It could well be that you've got the email address wrong.

The reason is right there in the mail message:

"Sorry, I wasn't able to establish an SMTP connection. (#4.4.1)"

Which means the mailserver that sent you the message couldn't connect to the mailserver used by the recipient, despite trying for a few days.

as you may have guessed, i know bugger all about computers so the error bit means nothing to me

there's every chance i've got the address wrong, it just seemed a bit of a strange message 'i've given up and won't be trying again'. a mail saying i'm an eejit who's put in the wrong address in would be better (and let me know what the prob is)

i got the above message 10 mins after sending the email so i guess the automated bit is spot on, just hope the writer doesn't do replies for the samaritans. everyone will be topping themselves

MTA means Mail Transfer Agent, you would use an MUA, Mail User Agent, with one. Outlook is an MUA. qmail is the name of the mailserver that is running on host X that tried to deliver your mail. There are others of course, sendmail, exim, postfix to name a few. Those servers that will accept mail for a domain have MX records, Mail eXchanger.
