CD Player won't read CD's

CD Player won't read CD's
OK, it's audio CD players but I'm guessing the computer technology is the same and some of the computer experts in here may know the answer.
I now have 2 CD players that won't read music CD's - you load the CD's and you can hear them spinning but the CD player never stops and the number of tracks never appear on the display. PS2 had a similar problem and a good cleaning of the laser helped but doesn't help the CD players - any thoughts?
p.s. genuine factory CD's, all in good nick
