Default 42" Plasma screen for PC - worthwhile ?

Mate wants a plasma screen for his computer / sky / dvd, in his study.

The one he's looking at has a DSUB (analogue) connector. Runs at 1280 x 1024

Price £1299

This sound any good ?

Any plasma TV for 1299 will be a crap picture. You need to spend 1500+ for a decent screen. And most around that price only have a native resolution of 852-480.....

If you want a big display and actually want to use it as a monitor, you can't beat the new Apple 30", although its erm, expensive. Especially if you don't already have the G5 and the 6800 video card it requires to drive it!

Seriously though, I would question whether a 42" is worth it because the pixel count spread over 42" isn't going to be enough to produce any sort of decent "working" quality. DVD's and DivX should be good though

I find a dual setup is much more usable, move movies and stuff over to the widescreen for cinema type watching, and then the tother for some light TV viewing if working or just both monitors running for work (I've found a 2nd monitor a much better productivity gain than a faster cpu btw).

ive brought lg 42inch plasma screen and it is wicked the size is somfing like 852X580 ive plugged my pc in and it comes out nice, i mean you not going to be sitting 2 metre in front of it so the pixellation effect is not that bad from 4 metres away. much better then my 17 inch lcd monitor anytime

Hello

I would say that kind of screen is great for playing games, but a little useless for an everyday monitor. You would have to sit 10 feet away!

scoobyjawa, thanks - thats the kind of stuff I wanted to hear.

The guy ha trouble with his vision, hemce the 42" screen. I was worried about display quality though. Native res is 853 x 480 which sounds ****, but it says it can handle 1280x1024 ??

No probs Daz.

What it means is that it only has 852x480 or whatever pixels it can itself display in (the native resolution of the screen, eg the total amount of pixels it has to use). Thus if you send a 1280x1024 to it the plasma screen downstreams it to fit in its 854x480.

Plasma's generally work either upstreaming sources (such as TV) and downstreaming sources (PC) to fit in its native resolution. Again, it depends on the screen how well it does it, but cheap ones aren't all that hot.

For DVD, if you have a progressive scan dvd player and use composite out and composite in to the plasma, you'll get pretty much the best pisture of any source as the resolutions match up almost perfectly leaving the screen to just display rather than process an up/downstream source and display too!

hmmm... i am a bit blur on this as well.

i am thinking of watching TV on the plasma. the "TV" is actually a laptop connected to a USB TV tuner. the max resolution on the laptop is probably 1024x768. so will i get "good" quality picture on the plasma?
