Question Printing off Macs that are already on a network...

Need to pick your brains.

Got a room of Apple Mac G5s
They're networked via Novell to the the internet (basic setup)

we've got some Konica photocopiers that we use as printers, however, the IT Dept have got to "investigate the inclusion of Macs on to a PC-native network"

So, in the meantime, I can't print off my Macs.

Can I use an airport and USB-based stand-alone printer to print from these computers (bypassing IT, therefore not causing any grief)

A sort of mini printer network for some networked machines....... the Macs have not been locked down (I'm administrator for them) - basic dynamic IP setting for internet and that's it.

Suggestions?

Dan

GRRRR Our IT dept here refuse to spend £70 (or let me in as a windows admin so I can do it myself) to allow our Macs access a particular shared network drive. Lazy gits. Since I joined this company I have only ever rang them once for help and that is only because I needed a new email password!

Anyhow, is your Aiport base station one of the Extreme variety? If so you have a USB port on the back into which you can plug a printer. The Macs will find them through "Rendevous" or AppleTalk as its now known in the printer setup util automatically.

Here is a list of compatible printers (not definative) if yours isn't on here try it anyway

Nice one m8

Haven't bought the airport yet, nor the printer, so it's pretty open ended

In that case then, you may want to get the cheaper Airport Express, it still supports wireless printing (up to 10 machines networked) but also as I know you are a music bod, will stream iTunes music to a stereo (via TOSlink).

How are you finding the G5's?

Ahh nice one.

G5s - really good. Got them with the flat-panel Apple studio displays (17")
They hang every now and again when changing been user logins....

Apart from that, really good.

Using them with Firewire audio boxes and Logic, ProTools, Reason and Cubase SX(yuck!)

Cool, I've heard about the user login hang before. Something to do with the gpu, but shouldn't cause the machine to fail.

Have you seen that in the new version of Logic (7), if you have networked Macs you can automatically cluster them to use their processors if you want to build massive tracks. Basically means you could edit huge amounts of stereo tracks with any single machine connected to the network ...

Do the Konica's just hang off a Novell print server? You should be able to log on to one of the PC's, get the IP address of the printer and print to the thing directly, at least that's what I do with our Richo networked copiers.

What do you do with your older versions? A mate of mine could be interested in buying Version 6 off you. He can't afford the full version and can't find any dodgy copies anywhere, but he's pretty good and could take it further with the right tools.
