How far will a wireless ADSL Router thingy transmit? In laws are moving to somewhere local to us and just wondering whether we can do a 'sneaky' and get them 'free' ADSL by linking to ours?

The range of a standard router won't be much use for house to house connection unless they are literally next door. However, if you have a clear line of sight, say over the road or down the street with use of an external directional antenna it could be done.

Was that 5km with a perfect line of sight or a number of repeater stations?

 

Perfect line of sight, no relays. You can add relays and only add 5 to 10 milliseconds of latency each time..
