Default Counterstrike Help (PC)

Hi all,

It's been AGES since I played CS on the PC, but was good fun at the time

However, 8 of us are getting together this Saturday to consume beer and play Counterstrike. (Cue the missus rolling her eyes and mumbling something about 'grown men' )

Problem is, I can't find a download of CS 1.6 anywhere, just this 700mb 'Steam' thing. So I downloaded this and installed it, but I don't think (!) it installed CS.

Anyone either know a) where to DL CS 1.6, or b) what I'm doing wrong with this steam program, oh and c) what is included in the steam file seeing as it's over 700mb in size

Ta

You have to get Steam now. 700MB sounds about right - it'll end up downloading the whole of Half Life & Counter-Strike, then you may have to put a CD key in.

In Steam, select 'Play Games' and you should see a whole list of games, one of which will be Counter-Strike. Right-click on it and hit 'Launch game...'

Steam (as far as i know) is not LAN compatable?

There is a dodgey russian hacked version out there on the www which works on LAN.

I have CS 1.6 with HL 1101 & said dodgey russian copy, you can pick up if you are local.

Otherwise, attend a proper LAN event http://www.lanse.co.uk

Steam does support LAN games, but each client has to authenticate with the Steam servers - so it needs a valid CD key.

Before Steam, you could have a LAN game without having to authenticate, and so could all use the same CD key. I guess that's what the 'hacked' versions of Steam let you do.
