New Veritas Backup exec server spec.
Spending money
Need to spec a veritas backup exec server (version 9.1). The current box is a 800MHz PowerEdge.
This needs to be able to push about 80 GB Plus a night onto the tape (64 bit DLT tape magazine unit).
It needs to be a) dell b) cheapish c) rack mount. I was thinking about a bog standard PowerEdge 750/2 GB RAM with IDE disk (non raid as it is easy enough to replace and doesnt contain mission critical stuff.
Any comments etc.
Two other questions though:
Can you integrated Windows 2003 into a nt4 domain and secondly is it a better option

Veritas Good option, expensive though with all the agents..
2003 server will sit in an NT4 domain similar to 2k in mixed mode, some of the default group policy/authentication will need to be changed.
All nt boxes must be sp6a to access 2003 resources, win 95 not supported as a workstation without some registry messing about though.

What's your backup window time?
80GB on one server or split across multiple?
DLT attached via SCSI to the backup server?
We use a Dell PowerVault with 2 DLT drives to backup some local servers and a few remote ones over the LAN.
I can post the specs and backup rates on Monday if it'll help as we use all Dell kit too.

We have about 10 Dell Servers backing over Veritas. I'll get you the details on Monday.
We are changing our backup routine as I type. I've just bought an Ultrium drive (400GB) as we run about 4 separate backups which makes about 50 tapes in our safe
