Fuji and Nikon have very good lenses and the Fujis in particular can give cracking results on what appears to be a lower megapixel than other cameras boast. Make sure if you are using it alot you get one with a Lithium Ion battery so battery life will be longer than the rechargables. Do not get the entry level HP as the colour accuracy is very poor if thats your thing.

Might be worth looking on www.macuser.co.uk as there was a recent review on this subject with some very good info

There are lots of things to consider depending on what you are using it for and the types of pcitures you are taking.

Try the fuji s5000 for that sort of money, depends what you want.. if you want basic slr features but not the highest picture quality you could get for your budget then the s5000 is the one. If you want no frills but better quality (i.e. higher MP rating), then look at somethjing like the new minolta d7

You can get the Fuji S602 for that kind of money, much better features than the S5000

Had one for a couple years now, great camera, only thing I'd replace it with is a S7000 lol.

Picked one up in the US a few weeks ago and the quality of pictures is really good. Its got a Carl Zeiss lens as well.

Still Camera or video?

Can recommend the Canon Ixus 500 (5 mega pixel) - slightly over your budget but the 430 (4.3 mega pixel) should be within your £250 budget.
