Default Formatted Flashcard Recovery Software

Hi all! I mistakenly formatted the flashcard in my Canon Ixus 400 last week!! I have not overwritten any thing on the card yet, so it should be fairly easy to get my pics back. My problem is the price! Some companies are charging up to €170 to recover my 256 megs approx, which to me seems crazy. Ive been informed that its possible to this yourself with the right software. I have tried a couple of sortware demos but none of them seem to be able to find my camera via USB. My question is, do I have to buy a flashcard reader or is there software out there (pref free) that will read the card from my camera?
Thanks in advance for all replies.

You will have to use a card reader via USB then the card recovery software will be able to manipulate the contents of the card.

I used Photo Rescue PC which worked flawlessly.

You need a card reader - the card needs to appear as a drive on your machine.

I still use the free software that the author decided to make into commercial software. It's still legal to use and distribute, but it's a bit old. I'm trying to remember the name... Will post when I get home.

Here's a freebie, too.
