Question How can I improve the boot up times?

The computer runs brilliantly, have no problems except that it takes a little longer than I'd expect to boot up in the morning ( don't we all )
Anything I could check to help improve this? Some sequence that could be altered on start-up?
Another problem is that sometimes (and this is rare but none the less there) the screen freezes on start up ( just as it gets to the word Pentium, except it freezes at Penti ) and I have to press that little 'defcom 4 button thingy'
to start the boot up again. This part of the problem does worry me a little more actually but generally I just pretend it's not happening, and go to the bathroom to brush my teeth.
Help?

Question

If you watch it boot up does it spend allot of time on the text screens (BIOS startup) or the graphical screens (XP startup).

Without knowing more about your machine, motherboard, BIOS, processor etc. it will be hard for anybody to give you good advice.

Just a couple of guesses but:

1) when the machine first starts the memory is tested and on later machines it runs through the address range three times, if you have allot of memory installed then this can take ages. There will be a setting in the BIOS that tells the machine to skip this detailed memory test and it boots allot faster.

2) Could be the boot sequence

3) Do you have a dead second disk or one that's on it's way out. The BIOS will stop and wait for the disk to respond which can take some time.

Hope you sort it.

Some stats....

Intel Pentium 4 3GHz.

System BIOS Phoenix Technologies LTD 6.00 PG.

Total Memory 511MB DDR SDRAM

Main Board Abit IC7/IC7-G(Intel i875-ICH5)

I'd say it was 50-50 between the BIOS start up screen and a blank screen.
