iPod G4 info
Thought some of you might be intrested in this
There is, of course, info here (Apple's site) as well.
My comments, hmm, well, I'll be down to the store when it's out ot give it a play with, I liked the G3, not sure about copying the Mini's control system though, but we shall see.
No mention of a 60GB model, just a $100 reduction on the 40GB and 20GB models, and the 15GB model is killed off.
Glad I did not purchase one last week! I can probably get a nice discount on a 40GB G3 iPod.
Can't see anything about 5.1 Support though, which would have been nice, especially as AirTunes has it.

Exactly! Even before the G4 and the price drop, a mini was still somewhat silly in comparison to a 'proper' iPod. But hey, it's a fashion thingy anyway, so mini's appeal to people.

The iPodmini was designed to compete with the flash memory based devices and the Creative MuVo 2, which it does very well. Both the iPodmini and the MuVo are selling tremendously well, even if you take into account those MuVo users who are simply buying the device to get a cheap 4Gb MicroDrive.
It's priced below £200, which is commonly seen as the limit of the typical person's consumer electronics budget. (£179 in the UK, £40 cheaper than the 20Gb iPod). It comes in colours which tend to attract people's attention more than pure white. The choice of colour also helps personalise the device, as people buy their favourite colour and therefore feel more attached to their iPod (sounds silly but how many Mac users do you know who are very emotional about their favourite fruit company).
For a geek like me, or others with a huge music collection, the Mini seems to restrictive and you'd fork out the extra for the 20Gb. But as a "second" iPod for your partner/parents/nephew, who perhaps aren't into computers or don't have 100s of CDs, it looks ideal.
I'm off to New York just before Christmas and 3 people have already asked me to bring one back with me for presents.
