Default Fitting a new processor

I currently have an Asus A7V333 socket A motherboard fitted with an Athlon XP1900 cpu.
Iv'e been thinking of upgrading to a faster processor so the question is

Which processor will fit without major hassle, i'm guessing i'd need a bigger fan to anyone have any idea

That motherboard should run any 333Mhz-bus Socket-A Athlon (up to a '3000+'). You may need better cooling - that entirely depends on what cooler you're using now, and what chip you want to run! Remember that if you buy a Retail CPU it will come with an appropriate cooler. OEM chips are about a fiver cheaper but have no cooler.

Look on the board and see what revision number it is. If it is a 1.xx board it will only run 266Mhz processors. You need the 2.xx revision to run 333 Mhz Cpu's

So if you have got a 1.xx mobo you are really limited to an XP2400+

Bought the system in April 2002 if thats any clue, although have found the manual out and it does mention it supports 266mhz bus speeds on the cpu fitting page.

If i can only step up from and XP1900 to a XP2400 would it make that much difference ?

In my opinion it wouldn't be worth it, you wouldn't notice a difference.

No going to an XP2400+ won't make to big a difference IMHO.
The only place you will find the revision number is on the board itself.

This is where to find it

That motherboard has a Via KT333 chipset, doesn't it? I thought that implicitly meant that 333MHz-bus chips could be used.

The Via website (http://www.via.com.tw/en/apollo/KT333.jsp) suggests that the chipset itself supports all 333fsb AMD chips. Perhaps there's hope yet! I've not seen the reference Daz34 used to comment on the board version number, so maybe Asus chose not to take advantage of all the chipset is capable of...?

http://www.asus.com.tw/mb/socketa/a7v333/overview.htm

<edit BK>
Forget what i've posted.

You can only run 266 cpu's

</edit BK>

You need to get a new mobo to upgrade further.

Cooling wise, it's very much suck it and see. The palomino core (your 1900) ran bloody hot, so your current cooling should be ok. Just make sure you clean the heatsync properly and use some "good" thermal compound. I only use "Artic Silver" it's currently on V5 - but 3 will be good for your cause.

If your cooling is insufficient, I recomens any cooler by "Thermalright" - the

ThermalRight SLK-947U from

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...right_120.html

Fan wise I like the Thermaltake "Smart case fan II" available from dabs - this fan is great because it adjusts it's speed depending on the temp of your cpu - of if your not doing much it'll spin @ about 1500 RPM, but when things get hot (around 50deg C) it goes upto 6000 rpm. Unlike other fan's it's fully automatic. With this setup my XP3000 sits at aboout 43 deg idle and 47 under load. Fan speeds never go above 3200 RPM.

Hope this helps

J

How odd! Why would they implement a 266-MHz fsb for the CPU yet support DDR2700 ?

looks like it's a combination of the MOBO revision & BIOS

You need to have a revision 2 mobo with 1016 (or later) bios,
