OSX goes 64 bit
WWDC - Apple unveiled/unveils Mac OSX Tiger (10.4) to go on general release in the first half of 2005.
Details so far sketchy, this is being announced as I type but it is 64 bit and includes metadata on files, searchable anywhere within the system from a search, emails etc included
More to follow
Oh almost forgot the 30" High Definition plat panel display, bit pricey though $3299. Still want one though

Can't help feeling a little smug, knowing that Longhorn won't have metadata on its initial release as by BG's own admission, they haven't figured out how to make it resource friendly. But we will be sat in 64 bit / metadata / goodness in 2005.

Anyway, BG will just wait till Apple come up with the solution and then steal it and do it better but with more service packs

As for stealing it then doing it better. Do you mean like Windows? Hardly did a better job of that did he?

And Apple also **** over Arlo and Perry's 'Konfabulator' by 'introducing' Dashboard! Not only is it using JS, but the 'apps' are called 'Widget's exactly what the Konfabulator apps are called.
We were not that impressed with ARD2 which was released last week, looks like someone has been taking a much closer look at our products, only taken them 6 years! lol Having said that they still don't quite "get" it, but they are getting there

It is a shame about K, but I think that Arlo and Perry will end up on top in the end. It wasn't a new concept to begin with though, although how Apple and Arlo both came up with the Konsposé / Dashboard at exactly the same time I don't know. Arlo has said in the past that he is very good friends with someone high up in Apple so maybe this is a little more co-ab than it appears.
Not had a gander at the new RD yet, heard though it was fully implemented into Tiger anyway but there hasn't been a mention so far.

Can someone explain the metadata on files thing? is that just updatable information attached to a file, like an executable, where you can maintain stats on that file and keep info?

It takes into account obviously the content of a file, eg full word document text, pdf text, file names, date created, size, date opened, copyright, application made in, author...
Literally everything there is to know about each file. Watch the quicktime here

to get a better idea of how good this really is.

Andy - As per the Dev seed. Well, we've not got anyone at the DC, simply as these days there is no real reason to be there when you can get updates on the web, plus seeing yanks doing a "bulmer" over a bloody OS is sickening. Anyway, we'll either get it from ADC website, or have it mailed to us as part of the ADC membership. Just have to make sure the boss has renewed the membership.
I can kinda get where this is going and it would probably be more than my life is worth, but if I can I will

LOL, I wouldn't want to put you in an awkward position mate. I have been checking the (free ) ADC site for any sign of it to us mortals but it looks like its not happening.
I watched the full stream this morning. At first after reading the web updates I wasn't sure what was so special but after seeing that I have already decided that it is a necessary upgrade in 2005

I've got a 'free' ADC account and from what I recall, they never put any of the dev seeds up there, it's only the Premier accounts that get them. And it will be seriously overloading their servers, as with Panther last year.

Just remembered I posted in here!
NTFS has a function in it called advanced data streams, which any meta data to be attached to any file. It's commonly used for the extended file information, but can be any form of data. you can try this out.
create a text file with some stuff in, eg c:\Fosters.txt
then run notepad.exe c:\fosters.txt:hidden.txt
say yes to create new file
once saved, you have untracable data tied to that file (unless you have a tool to search for it (I do if anyone's interested)
the ad stream is linked to fosters.txt and if you delete fosters.txt, the fosters.txt:hidden.txt is removed too.
Quite useful in the hacking/trojan/virus community. you can attach a whole nother executable to explorer.exe and no one's the wiser!
any hoo, why did MS do this? IIRC, it was to emulate an aspect of the Mac file system a long time ago (since NT4).
question: why is this new to osx x? didn't you have it before? MS didn't get there first for 'any' data attachment to files, surely

if you want to attach an executable to another file. then, example
create c:\Fosters.txt
type calc.exe > c:\Fosters.txt:Calc.exe
create a shortcut to c:\Fosters.txt:Calc.exe (the shortcut should take on the icon from the executable)
calc.exe is not listed, only Fosters.txt and the shortcut
delete fosters.txt and the exe is gone too.

No Fosters its not a case of attaching a txt/or any other file to a file. The metdata is automatically created with each file. eg if you have a PDF file, then all of the text within the document is searchable.
So if you went to the Spotlight search button, and searched for "Subaru" it would bring up every single file on your system that mentions Subaru, be it in the file name, or buried deep within a PDF or an email, or an email address. It also presents the results in a nice tiered order.
None of this create c:\blah moo.txt - all done automatically, like defrags on OSX. They are done second to second, you never have to defrag your drives.

Good decision, I don't know one person who has regretted making the switch. That's people who do all sorts too, programmers, music, design, web monkeys. The lot. If you need to do a bit of Windows dev, you can always use Virtual PC anyway.
