Question PDA's

Can anyone recommend a (cheap-ish) PDA satnav setup with european coverage? It'll be mostly used for the satnav so not interested too much in having top spec hardware, just one that'll do the job

Dont know about cheap... especially if you want stability.

Personally I have the XDA II coupled with TomTom 3 - amazingly simple, and surprisingly more correct than TomTom2 was.

How much did that set you back and does it have European coverage?

Yes, Euro coverage is possible although I only have UK. The maps are not that expensive. The XDA is tops £600 without contract to as little as Free with contract (but massive monthly account). Tom Tom 2 with the reciever was around £300... the upgrade to TT3 was a mere £40.

I'll say this.. not having to worry about reading maps, or road signs from home to destination is a joy! Very relaxing and well worth the initial outlay if you travel alot like I do

O2 are doing a deal with the XDA-II and TomTom3. £ 420 I think. You get PDA, Sat Nav, as well as a phone.

I got mine free too and made £100 selling the XDA original I had too. Running TomTom on the original one was very slow and it kept crashing as it didnt have enough memory really but the II is way better in terms of it's hardware so have no trouble with it at all. Plus of course it's bluetooth which means you get to look like a cyborg

Have a look at Handnav - I've got a Dell Axim 3 running TomTom3 - they have a bundle for £399, which is pretty good. It comes with a 128Mb SD card which is good enough to hold the whole of the UK. If you want to use the European maps, you will either need to overwrite the UK maps or get a 256Mb SD card.

TT3 comes with a "Major Roads of Europe" map as well as the UK, so if you don't want too much detail you could go for that. Otherwise, you'll have to buy the "Maps of Western Europe" although Ebuyer seem to be the cheapest for these at <£90.

I have an IPAQ 3630 with a compact flash battery jacket and 128 Mb compact flash card I was about to put on ebay.( If you are interested)

I also have a cable to plug it into a GPS and car cig socket.

I used it with TT2, I now use my IPAQ 3970.

If you upgrade to TT3.03 (download from the Tomtom support site) this problem should go away...
