Default Preventing Outlook from closing..

Is there anyway of changing the behaviour of Outlook XP, so that it minimises rather than closing when the cross is clicked?

I think you'll find typically when you close outlook it still runs as a background task. If you close it then do ctrl+alt+del | Task Manager | Processes then it may well appear there in which case it will still be checking mail for you.

I thought that was what the Outlook Online/Offline settings were for, but it doesn't look like it. If I close Outlook it disappears from the Process list and I don't see any new mail notifications.

It's set up for internet mail collecting sending from FTGate POP/SMTP server, not exchange (if that makes any difference)

No it's a Windows behavior, close a program - it closes!

What's the problem anyhow?

Not necessarily, depends on the application, many apps like kazaa automatically minimise to the tray and continue running.

I agree (many??), but Kazaa isn't exactly a regular software package! Why don't you just click the minimize button, instead of close?

Yes nick many! Well Ive written plenty myself that run as tray apps. Anyway fig it looks like outlook running after you close it isnt the default (which is what happens on my machine) but that applications like virus checkers keep outlook running in your process list. So perhaps whack an AV tool on and see what happens?

Do that most of the time, I'm trying to protect against the other occasions when the X is clicked absent-mindedly, thereby preventing emails from being received in a timely fashion.

I've used HideOE with Outlook Express that does what I want and keeps OE running unless you unload HideOE from the system tray. Looking for a similar app to work with Outlook.

Already have AV (Sophos) running, but it scans emails at the gateway, not at a local level (although also scans on access to attachments etc.)

now as to what the the Outlook Online / Outlook Offline settings on the send/receive tab in options is for.
