Default MS office files and IE

What plug-in/filter/module etc is used by Internet Explorer to enable it to display Office files (.xls, .doc etc)? How is this enabled/disabled?

I think its just to do with the registered file types, so open a normal explorer window go to Tools|Folder Options...|File Types and IE will just open a file based on that information.

Thanks Gary. Probelm is that (on the PC in question) .xls files are associated with Excel, not IE. Is there a way to specify whether a program can open a particular file type, and not the other way around (as above)? Perhaps buried away somewhere in the Registry...?

Are you wanting to have IE open all office files by default or just unable to get IE to see them at all?

I just wanted to stop IE opening .xls files automatically and return an Open/Save/Cancel dialog box.

I *think* I've found the solution, though. Under Windows Explorer; Tools\Folder Options\File Types\ (.xls files) \Advanced\ - make sure that the check box 'Confirm open after download' is marked. Seems to do the trick.

That's a bit complex! The user in question is a Salesperson.
