why am I getting this alert??
I keep getting this box coming up in the top left hand corner of the screen saying " you have just ignored an incomming call'' and an "ok" box to click. Then more often than not it disconects me from the net (freeserve dial up)
I don't have call waiting on my phone.
I'm worried that it could be some sort of virus or spyware.
I've got zone alarm as a firewall.
AVG anti virus and Spybot which I've been using to zap spyware.
I've run checks and I'm all up to date with the uptade downloads but nothing is coming up ggrrr.
Anyone have any ideas what it could be?
I've been into internet settings but can't see anything relevant.
Its getting on my nerves now.
thanks
cath

This might be the XP Messenger Service (not to be confused with Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger).
Go to Control Panel - Performance & Maintenance - Administrative Tools - Services & double click on Messenger out of the list & in the Start Up Type box disable it
It is a pain in the **** & doesn't do anything useful.

do you have a fax program on your pc?
sometimes mine used to do it "when i had dial up" it was the fax machine seeing either a phone call or a fax.
just disable the function, and make it so it only activates when told to.
as for spyware get yourself a copy of norton, that will tell you immidietly.

Nope no fax Jamo, but thanks for the suggestion.
I've given Darren's suggestion a try so we'll see if it works. I hope I haven't buggered anything up! I'm always worried when I mess with any settings!
Thanks for your help guys

Cath,
It wont be the Messenger Service that Darren has mentioned, but you wont suffer any side effects from having the service disabled though.
Sounds more likely to be something to do with your modem.

Looks like your right Ian cos the soddin thing just did it again now gggrrrrr
Should I put that messenger thing back now then?
I'm going to investigate the modem settings.
If I don't come back for a while you'll know I've messed with something I shouldn't
lol
Thanks again guys

Cath, is it a Packard Bell? This error is usually caused by one of two things; either you have call waiting, if so then disable it before dialing, or; you need updated modem drivers. Windows XP and V92 dont mix too well; if it is a PB then go to the packardbell.co.uk website and download the latest Aztech 2800 drivers, otherwise go to your modem manufacturers site.

Cath,
You can leave the messenger thing off, it wont cause you any problems by having it off.
As Simon has said the drivers for the modem need to be checked, that they are the latest versions etc...and also that there is nothing about call waiting in there etc..

Naah its not a Packard Bell.
Its called Smart Link 56k Modem if that makes sense?
I've just made sure that its set up to stay connected for incomming call and it is.
I checked my phone as I wondered if 1571 could be messing it up but I don't think thats anything to do with it.
There is an update drivers link but will that bugger up my connection details??

The reason that I asked if it was a PB was because they use the Smartlink/Aztech 2800 modems. This is a known issue with windows XP; go to the website that Ian mentions above and download the latest drivers, select:
Support > Download > 'LICENCE AGREEMENT FOR ENDUSERS' > click 'Yes' > Internal modems > select your operating system (usually XP for this error) > SLA56-V3.60.03-MV-WIN2K-XP.exe (assuming its XP) This is id=27 and it might work if you go directly to it but it didnt used to; the site has changed in appearance since I used to use it though so it might work now

1571 should only prevent you from dialing out; it will cause a 'no dial tone' error; just listen to the messages/turn it off so that you hear a normal dialing tone and it will be fine.

Call waiting is a right bugger for dialup users. I've never had the problem personally but I know that BT's call waiting system used to take a call as you were on the internet and then try to inform you and this disconnected you from your dialup. Bugger
