It would not surprise me, outlook express doesn't actually seem to delete anything unless you launch holding down option and rebuild the databases so I would guess there is.
Can't help you any further though I'm afriad.
Might help the others if we know what OS and what mail software, if it's OSX and Mail then I suspect you are out of luck, don't know about Netscape or Quickmail if yuo are one of those rare few...

Is it MS Entourage?
If it is, have they actually been deleted or have they just disappeared? Sometimes on MS Entourage, they just go away for no reason. A re boot of the programe will solve this.

Once it's deleted from the "Deleted Items" folder, it's gone as far as
usability by Outlook Express. However, you might still be able to salvage
some of the message content.
First, locate your user data:
Open Outlook Express normally. *When it opens, go to File -> Switch
Identities. Click New and create a new identity with an obscure name, Then,
when you have it open, hide Outlook Express and open Sherlock. Do a search
for the name you entered. *A folder will then appear with the exact
name.**Click on it, and look below to see the path.**The folder named
Identities is where your data is stored. *Make a note of the location. It
should be in one of the following two places:
* Macintosh HD
ocuments:Microsoft User Data:Identities
* Outlook Express 5 Folder:Identities
Once you find it, open your identity folder, and Option-drag the "Messages"
file to the Desktop to make a copy. Now, open a word processor (like
AppleWorks or Word). Go to File -> Open, then choose the "Messages" file on
the Desktop. Be patient, it may take awhile to open. Do NOT make any
modifications, as tempting as it may look. Find the message you are looking
for (use Edit -> Find), and Copy/Paste into a new document. Do NOT save any
changes if prompted. You can then delete the Messages file on the Desktop.

Cheers mate, I knew how to do that on a PC, I hadn't realised it could be done on a Mac aswell.
Basically I have told him to do a search for .dbx files and then copy the deleted items folder to somewhere then have a mess about opening it up - the problem is neither of us can drive a Mac

hit command F, throws up a find dialog, you should be able to look for filenames ending with .dbx so do that, which will show the files, you can then, from the results window, copy these items to the desktop, so you can mess with them.
