Default Fastest P2 processor?

Can anyone remember what the fastest P2 processor was?

A friend has 2 PC's for his kids, but they need upgrading to play kids games/educational software. At present they are P2 350 and P2 400's.

I have a funny feeling that they will need new motherboards if the CPU speeds are to be increased to say 800 or 900Mhz...plus new memory, plus new PSU and case!!

Anyone any ideas on fastest speeds for P2 motherboards?

I haven't got round to delving inside the case to check motherboard makes/models yet, but guess I will have to...

450MHz was the crossover between P2 & P3.

Could you update the BIOS so they take P IIIs? Even then though, you'd need to source the PSUs.

Probably better to go for an upgrade.

No such thing as a P2 motherboard only slot 1, so should take PII and PIII (slot 1s only) might even take PIII coppermines if you lucky enough, what the make of your motherboard ??

This tool might help, it was posted on another thread by DJ Dunk http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

Nowadays you would be far better off starting from scratch with say a cheap P4 mothboard and get a Socket 478 Celeron, either that or go the AMD route and get durons.

If you need to start talking about power supplys (which to be honest a P2 power supply will be just fine for a P3, its only P4's and Durons/Athlons where you need to worry) then your better off upgrading the lot. Things like memory will be more expensive due to its age, as you cannot use DDR memory with older boards, certainly not a Slot 1 board.

My advice would be to stick the old stuff on ebay, see what you can get for it, and start again. You can easily build a nice base unit for less than 250 quid which would have the capability to be useful for quite a number of years.

Hope that helps...
Neil.

PPP Scooby, I use the cpuz program as well, its bloody hnady work working out how much memory is in a machine, motherboard bios version, motherboard make and version etc.

And you can run it off a floppy disk as you don't have to install it

Thanks for the advice.

I've already briefed the friend that new base units may be needed, although I might look at P3 CPU upgrades.

I'll download the prog and see what motherboards they have...will save me opening the cases to find the numbers!
