Look in the Help with regards to modifying Styles. It can get quite in depth, but just changing the font for the "Normal" style is straightforward.

Simplest way (i find) is to create a template, specifying font, margins headers/footers etc.
When you run Word, open the template instead of 'blank document'

In a new document
Select Format from top menu
Then Font
Select what font and size etc.
Down bottom left of the box it says Default.
Select this and it will ask do you want to change the default font on any future documents.
