computer help please, im desperate!!!
just got my computer back from repair, complete with new hard drive and memory stick. problem is this:
it starts up ok, windows 2000 professional
then has a box with username: administrator and requests a password!!??
dont know what thats about. if you leave the password blank and hit enter you go straight into the desktop ok.
But, it then comes up with "found new hardware wizzard"!!??
hit next to continue, then says something about the wizard will complete the installation of this device - video controller (vga compatible)
search for suitable driver.
so i hit next, but it cant find a suitable driver from the floppyor cd rom drives??!!
also, i`ve tried to change my wallpaper, but the images are corrupt, and not true quality, also tried to install my digi camera cd, but you cant make out the wording when it pops up as its just speckled dots!!??
can someone please help me. im at a loss.
regards, Cliff

cliff,
win 2k pro is a network version of win 2k hence the logon prompt, don't worry, to setup a password just press ctrl+alt+del all together click change password!..
Sounds like you need to re-install the drivers for your graphics card.. also worth checking your running in 16 or 32 bit color depth, right click on your desktop, settings tab then select higher colour range, you may be only in 16 or 256 colours hence the poor display!
Cheers
Tim

Need to know what graphics card you have, any ideas??, does the monitor cable plug into the ATX area or do you have a AGP based card??
Could also have a look in the device manger see if it's recognises the card, right click on MY COMPUTER>PROPERTIES>HARDWARE TAB>DEVICE MANGER, you migh see it listed there..
Once you know what card you have, easy peesey!

Probability of it being ATI radeon series or Gforce series
so either www.nvidia.com or www.ati.com
both drivers work for all models - just try both.

ok, don't worry, do you plug your monitor in right near to your mouse & keyboard... or is the monitor plug (blue) abit further apart in a slot??, his will determine if you have on board graphics or an agp card..

mmmn can't see much info, prob gonna be an early agp or pci based card, especially as it came with ME..
when the computer boots up do you see any text before the bios that tells you about the graphics card??, best way to check is to boot your computer uo as normal, just after it finish's detecting the hard drives etc, press reset his will show the pre boot & the monitor will be on full power, if you see anything press "pause" & write it down

Turn on the PC and start tapping the F8 key, which will bring up a Windows 98 Startup Menu.
Highlight Safe Mode by pressing 3, press Enter.
You will get a message "Windows is running in safe mode", click OK.
Click Start, move to Settings and click Control Panel.
Double click System.
Click Device Manager tab.
Click the plus (+) sign next to DisplayAdaptors.
Highlight the Intel810 driver and click Remove. If more than 1 is present, repeat steps 7 & 8 till all are gone.

sti555, thanks for all your time and advise last night. I have spoken to the repair shop today, who agree that the graphics card has not installed. I will pop it back later on today for them to sort it out.
I am ok with computers, ie I can find my way round alot of basic problems, but this one is beyond me
Cheers for your help. I owe you
regards, Cliff
