Edit after reading post properly !

I use Nero MP3s to burn to CD. It'll filter out any files that are not MP3's and will also check each file to ensure its not corrupt. Having said that, any burning software will do it, just burn as a normal data CD.

For CD ripping to MP3 - lots about, but my fave is CDex Free too.

You had to get a plug in for pre version 9 as well.

Question

HELP!!!
I have taken your advice, downloaded CDex and converted my first album to MP3.
Now, I am a real beginner at this: What next??? Where (if anywhere) has CDex saved the new MP3 files OR how do I save them on to a a CD Rom??? I cannot see anything explaining this.

Run CDex & then select OPTIONS - FILENAMES. It should show you here where your converted tracks are. You can also change the location as well.
CDex will not burn a CDROM for you though.

Another vote for iTunes, be it Mac or PC version. Or, a combination of iTunes and Toast, which is usually what I use (to get CD text for 'normal' audio cd's as iTunes does not seem to do this)
