Large corporate LAN - Switch recommendations please.
Just after some general opionions before I start looking at vendors.
We are moving to a new building and are going to build a completely new LAN rather than take our exising kit (Enterasys).
Obviously we are going to look at the serious players in the market such as Cisco, Enterasys etc (someone suggested that the new 3Com stuff is good)
Basically it will be a 600 user LAN with gigabit backbone/gigabit ethernet to servers minimum (may also do gigabit to desktops)
Fire away with your opinions/suggestions

Why on earth put Gigabit to the desktop ? Make sure you buy modular switches and then over time you can change the balance between 10/100/1000 users as required.
Backbones and servers should always be greater capacity than users to prevent any single user hogging bandwidth.
I'm a big Cisco Fan. Depending how spread out the users are a couple of 6500 for the backbone/commsroom/servers and some 4500 for floor distribution.

Unless you're doing DV or something equally as intensive over the network, I don't see the need to splash out on Gbit switches and NICs for the desktop. Go for Gbit on the server side and of course Cat 6 throughout.
Use the money you've saved on Gbit to the desk for VoIP
Cheers,
Alex

Well it that case, sod the Cat 6 and fibre up all the desks and be done with it!
On a more serious note, I would have thought that something like the Cisco 6500 / 4500 as already mentioned would be the way to go.
I take it your budget also includes security options? Departmental firewalls to segment users, anti virus and perhaps some form of IDS / IPS (look at Cisco's CSA products) or something fron Netscreen's IDP range would fit nicely.
I'm assuming you will have some form of internet connection too? A decent firewall and some form of bandwidth management would also be useful.

Gigabit to the Desktop is becoming more popular as most PC/Laptop vendors now ship 10/100/1000 Nics with all new system. Even my IBM Thinkpad has a gigabit Interface now. Also the cost difference is not as much as you would expect.
If your moving into a new building you might also want to look at IP Telephony. All the main PBX vendors have moved to IPT as it has significant benefits expecially if you are moving into a new building.

Thanks for all the input so far. Tony I may give you a call but I can't promise you will get any work out of us as we already have voice and data partners who we have used for some time.
Yes IPT is cool but to be honest whenever we looked at it, it just seemed to deliver the same as traditional PBX's with more cost etc..

Cisco if you have the money or Allied Telesyn switches ( got to be as reliable as cisco but cheaper) with gigbit modules, we just recently moved building and are using Allied Telesyn like the At8024gb's etc..... and we are basically running VOIP and VOD across it all without any probs
