Sygate Personal Firewall is good.

Avoid ZoneAlarm.

Thumbs up

As a freebie you could do a lot worse than Sygate Personal Firewall (at bottom of page) or the Pro version (at top of page) which is about 48 dollars.

The free version is good and they seem to have ironed out most of the XP difficaulties it had

The Pro version is aimed more at the corporate users or so I'm told by my resident IT security specialist that recommended it in the first place

A good solution is to use a router in combination with software/personal firewalls on the PCs. Routers needn't be expensive, and they remove the any direct connection to the internet. Therefore anyone trying to connect to your external IP address just 'sees' the router, and not your PCs.

How techy are you?

If you've got an old PC lurking about, goto IPCop & download a copy of their FREE Linux based firewall software

2 network cards needed or 1 + PCi ADSL modem

Gets my vote

I currently use Norton PFW, which is very irritating and resource hungry. I wouldn't really recommend it TBH. It does do the Job, but there is better one out there.

It does works quite well though, only if you set everything up manually and doing scans to make sure it's doing the job - as default it (as with many other firewalls) it provides very minimal protection, so you need to make sure whatever you use is configured and doing the job (a good place to check the security of your system is http://www.grc.com/

But if you know what your doing There's some nice features, like the integrated web features, and the Java, Referer and inbuilt cookie blocking. And also permanent IP address range blocking - which'll stop all those virus ridden computers using comcast ISP (along with many others) in the states from trying to get in your computer.

And you should have a firewall anyway regardless of your connection speed.

right, thanks all, reading the posts there doesn't seem to be a great deal of point in stopping at PC world on the way home and spending hard earned cash...

it looks like I can get some decent stuff for free?

What's wrong with Zone Alarm??

I've had it on my pc for months together with Norton Anti-Virus and I haven't been hit with anything.

Zone Alarm seems okay for me

Nothing wrong with Zone Alarm, I use it at home and it provides a good level of security.

Using the well known vulnerability checker at

https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

Zone Alarm failed on only ONE port out of 1056, the newly used UPnP port. This should be resolved in the next release. Not only did Zone Alarm protect against all other port requests, it stealthed them, allowing legitimate usage (ie. online gaming) via user acknowledgement.
