Wink

Had our present computer (pentium 4 2.4 hz Windows XP Home Edition) for I guess about 18 months or so now. It's been an absolute pleasure to own. No problems ever. I've always tried to save pic/sound files to disc, defragmented often, have auto xp updates etc etc and I like to think this has kept things trouble free.
Now, 'things' are starting to slow down just a little. no obvious reasons why but yeah it's degraded a little.
Should I prepare for an reinstall now? Does it matter if I wait until things become unbearable? Will it have any bearing on the final reinstall? Will the degregation speed up or does it not work like that? Is it possible to save the XP updates to disc or will I need to purchase an update disc? Any other tips, feedback?
Thanks.

Andrew,

Well I rebuild about 3/4 months and that is way too often, in fact Im already having problems and this install has only been on here about 2 months. It takes me days to get back to where I need to be because of tools and libraries I have to install so I bought a copy of ghost and just installed the OS/Office/Dev tools and libraries and took a snapshot at that point so I can go back to that and save myself a lot of pain. Ive been a Windows user for a long time but its getting worse the amount of junk that comes thru via email/web even with filtering and firewalling.

cheers

Hi all,

But does anyone know of any decent software\utilities that keeps your PC running tip-top and without the need for regular re-installing (which is starting to get on my nerves !)

Cheers

LOL@Gedi

Muffle, well no to answer your question, the inherent problem is Windows architecture, installers leaving $hit loads of DLLs all over your system and perhaps even changing ones that the OS uses to render controls, no versioning and uninstalls dont always clear everything, just try and keep the number of apps you install to a min is about as good as you can get.

cheers

Blimey! Sounds like I've been a little lucky with how things have gone with our comp.
