XBOX Questions... Any clued up people on here!!

OK thinking about buying an Xbox.. to be honest only interested in two games Fifa 2004 as I love football games and Soul Caliber II as I used to love the first one.. I know there are a few other decent games coming out but they are the main two that I want it for..
Now I know you can sign up to XBox live and play various XBox live enabled games over the Web, which I believe I can connect the xbox via RJ45 to my router for internet access.
What I want to know is, is it possible to play with someone over a LAN???
So lets take this for example...
I connect my XBox to my router and give it a Static IP Address which is on my network.. so I should now be able to ping my XBox from my PC...
Then my friend does the same at his house..
Then we connect to each others routers via VPN, so we are now both on the same LAN segment.. I can now ping his PC (which I know works as we play C&C generals this way against each other), which should mean I can now also ping his XBox and the same goes for him..
So now that we can ping each others XBoxes would we then be able to load up ..say Soul Caliber II and then play against each other..
Can this be done...??????
Thxs for your help

Fifa 2004 is as far from realistic football as I am from Pluto.
Get Pro Evolution Soccer 3 for the PS2 (or PC soon). Much more realistic.
They have really screwed Fifa up this year, making it complex for no good reason.
You can shoot from the halfway line and the ball travels twice as fast as a Subaru... it is a joke. Gameplay wise the game sucks. The graphics and sounds are good - commentary can be a bit random - e.g. saying things which do not correspond to the action.
Avoid it and spend your money elsewhere.
As for the bulk of your questions - sorry, I don't know... but I thought I would give you my opinion about Fifa (even though you didn't ask for it)
Hope somebody else can help you with the question.

oh .. thanks for your comments ..
Hmmmmm maybe I won't bother then as I only like playing these consoles with friends.. hate playing them on my own (as the misses won't play me)
So may as well stick with the online community with the pc then ..
thanks

yeah this is the reason I really want to be able to play over the net.. most of my mates live miles away so it would of been cool to of been able to play via the VPN with them
I thought that this would of worked as I heard that Halo isnt a xbox live game but people have managed to play other people on it via the Web
oh well

halo will work as u described, best with xbconnect it think. basically tricks the xbox into thinkin its connected to another xbox. halo is a system link game hence it'l work. i only said soul calibur wouldnt as its not a system link game (they tell you if they are on the back)

Ah I get ya
so if a game saids (on the box SYSTEM LINK) or (XBOX live) then I can play my mate via a VPN connection using XBConnect/X-Link Messenger and the XBox must be chipped...
IS XBConnect/X-Link Messenger a bit of software?? How much is it and where do I get it from..
Also how much is chipping ...
Sorry for all the questions but unless it will do what we need then there is no point in buying one.

get ya chip from www.baldbouncer.co.uk
xblive ones wont work on xbconnect. xb live is the official microsoft service but it detects if u have a chip then bans you, so if u intend on using xbox live get a chip with a disable switch so u can turn it off at will.
xbconnect is free www.xbconnect.com this will only work with system link games, n i think its only a selection of them, not all of them but u'l find more info on that website

Don't get confused between System Link and X-BOX live. Although both allow multiplayer they work in different ways.
IE
1. You can play System Link games via home (or work) LAN
2. You can play System Link games via XBConnect (fools X-Box into thinking it's on a LAN) X-Box has to be chipped!
3. You can not play system link games on X-Box Live. They need to be marked as "X-Box Live" on the game box
4. You can not play X-Box Live games on XBConnect
5. You can not play your chipped X-Box on X-Box Live. You will be banned!
It think this is right. Anyone else please correct me if necessary.

True, I stand corrected. Although its generally used by those who have
When in system link mode ALL XBoxes use the IP address 0.0.0.1
But, if you're PC isn't near your xbox you'll be wanting to use Bo-XLink, in which case you WILL need to be modded.
