I'm looking at going to broadband at home. I have a BT line so the obvious choice would be BT broadband at £27.99 per month.

However, I currently use FreeNetName as my ISP and they have a broadband package for £29 per month.

Is there likely to be any difference in service/speed betwenn different ISP's?

Can anyone reccomend another supplier (not cable though) - any other broadband related advice would be appreciated too.

Cheers.

I've just gone with eclipse who were superb to connect with.
No problems in my first two weeks

And they review very well on adslguide.

They get a lot of stick but I have found NTL very good. I have a package for free calls and 800k Broadband access, works out to be good value.

I went for pipex because they had the cheapest start-up costs (no activation, modem for 15 quid including 2 micro filters), good connectivity on ADSLguide, and came recommended.

I still can't fault 'em after 4 months.

In fact, if you end up choosing them let me know as they run a refer a friend scheme which blags the referrer a month's free subscription

Cheers,
Nick.

and I would rather hack my knackers off than deal with btopenworld. Truly a bloody nasty experience! Customer service is now hived offshore, and as soon as you deviate from the script, you are knackered.

Loathesome, absolutely loathesome. I hate the BTO service with a passion.

NTL used to do 128k cable for about £9.99 IIRC. Obviously you need to be in an NTL area. Check on their website.

virgin are not that good
i have been with them for 4 months

the problems in conection are not huge/often but can be annoying.
however i am sticking with them because they are good in that you can cancel with a months notice

pipex seem good value but i do not like the fact that if you cancel within 12months you have to pay 60 quid, unlike virgin

i like my flexibility

Hardly secret mate - they tell you about it up front! Any other ISP will charge you that 58 quid up front to cover the line activation as that's the fee that BT levy to upgrade your line.

Cheers,
Nick.

virgin is no activation cost and no penalty if you cancel within a year
although monthly subscription is about 1.50 a month more

If u can can get NTL cable in your area I highly recommend them- if you have to go adsl services I go for pipex - know 3 differnet people who have pipex and its been good - My dad uses BT openworld 512k adsl and its ok but you do get quite a few outages......

Well my PIPEX Adsl went live today and seems fine so far. Had an initial problem but that was due to the internal wiring by the last person living here. Hopefully its more reliable than my NTL connection was.
