When starting the internet recently, I keep getting an extra "Microsoft Internet Explorer" tab in the taskbar - when I click on it it opens a window up under the clock so i cant see it.
I keep getting lot os pop ups lately too - i'm assuming this mystery prog is responsible - how do i get shot of it?

right click on task bar icon, close... Or ctrl-shift-esc then kill the program. Then start looking for why it's there
Is it in startup? Is it in the registry Run entry? has something changed your homepage.
best advice is to ditch the buggy browser and use a proper one - I'm using firebird, and it's bloody fantastic

I'm also trying firebird out after an earlier post.
It certainly has some better features over IE. Seems to load pages slighty quicker as well.
One gripe though, I'd like to change the Google search box to google.co.uk instead of .com
Any ideas?

Click on the "G" icon, and a dropdown list appears with "Add engines". This takes you worryingly to "mycroft.mozdev.org" where you can download the extension to allow google.co.uk as your search engine

It's not riddled with holes and exploits, by default it blocks popups and protects your privacy, the rendering engine is fast and works, it's designed with usability in mind... It's not a revolution in terms of feature set, but it provides just what I want with a simple configuration interface.
It also installs simply by unzipping into a directory, so it's easy to put on and just as easy to get rid of.
See here for their reasons to use Firebird.
I honestly think that once you try it, particularly tab browsing, you'll like it a lot. The usability is just fantastic.

It's released under the Mozilla Public License and is open source. You don't have to pay to use it, so by most definitions of freeware, yes it is. In a strict legal sense, it's distrubuted freely under the mozilla public license.
Don't ya just love it when lawyers get involved with software
