I'm guessing your using 2000/XP. They got this annoying funtion as standard that lets spammers send messages direct to your computer.
To disable this,
Control Panel | Services | Messenger
Right click on it and click stop

MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger are almost identical instant message programs. Both of these will give you notification of any available updates when you sign in. In addition to these there is the network Messenger service. It is this third one that is responsible for the annoying pop-up ads (the latest of which are adverts to call a premium rate number to find out how to stop getting annoying pop-up ads ) - follow the instructions given to stop the ads - but note this is just a quick fix remedy, if you are getting pop-ups it means your PC is advertising its presence on the internet - get a firewall!

Cheers for the info guys but the strange thing is ive had Shoot The Messenger for months now. Never had a Windows Messenger Pop Up since running it alongside my Firewall but im STILL getting the Windows Messenger Update pop up.
Any ideas? It seems that if i dont click YES to update it's just going to keep popping up and telling me i HAVE to update.

You WILL get the Windows Messenger (the instant message prog) pop-up every time there is a new version available, and every nn days thereafter if you do not update it.

Shoot the Messenger does NOT disable Windows Messenger. It disables Microsoft's Network Messenger Service. This has absolutely zilch to do with either of the chat applets (Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger) In typical MS style, there is more than one program/item with almost identical names.
(See my first post on this thread for more info)

Thanks for clearing that up
Ive clicked yes to update as its Windows Messenger and nothing ad pop up related adverts. I now have another question.
Why, after the update is my firewall advising me that msmsgs.exe is tryin to access the internet? I decline access because i dont want to log onto MSN but then a couple of minutes later i get the same advisory

There are two Microsoft IM clients - Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger. You can have both installed on your machine at the same time, both will use the same contacts list etc., and if you try to connect both at the same time, each will disconnect the other as it starts.
msmsgs.exe is Windows Messenger - the one that comes as part of the operating system and insists on trying to start itself automatically when you start Windows, connect to the internet, open Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and any other application which may want to use it. There are settings to prevent this action, but they are as much use as a chocolate teapot as the program defies your wishes. The alerts you are getting will most probably be due to this auto-start. This program is required if you want to be able to use Remote Assistance, otherwise IMO it is a waste of space. This one will not be listed in Add/Remove programs as it is hidden by the Operating System. It is possible to remove it by running a command line instruction. Strangely enough, if you uninstall it, and then download/reinstall it behaves itself and complies with your wishes!
MSN Messenger (msnmsgr.exe) is almost identical in operation and to the majority of users is essentially the same product. You have the same options to start with Windows, start when you connect, open IE,OE etc., but if you choose not to do any of these, the program does as you ask.
If you have a need to use both, then you will need to give permission for msmsgs.exe and msnmsgr.exe to access the internet.
To uninstall Windows Messenger, close all instances of Messenger (both!), Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Microsoft Office etc. then click Start > Run and enter the floowing (best if you copy and paste this into the run dialogue first, then close the apps down before clicking OK.)
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
