A friend of mine has a Mac, poor sod, and has recently had broadband enabled and therefore purchased a Personal Firewall product, as above.

Unfortunately, he runs OS9.04 and the current version of Personal Firewall needs 9.2 minimum.

Does anyone have any idea where I could find an older copy of NPF (like 1.02) for him (that'll work with OS9.04), 'cus the last thing he wants is to change his OS - as he's only a freelance journo (for car mags) and isn't the most technical bloke on the planet......

I've tried the usual places - and even though he's more than happy with spending the cash (as he has done) no-one can supply him with an old version that will work on his OS.

Pain....

Any help appreciated. Email per profile if you prefer.

Thanks Nick......

...but I've just reread my original post and realised that I must have been on something when typing it - as it didn't quite say what I meant it to say, and (frankly) was completely confusing.

So, now changed the post to more accurately reflect what I want to try and find. ie. A copy of Norton PF for Mac, version 1.02 (I think).

Cheers

Shades - upgrading the OS from 9.0 to 9.2 is extremely easy on the Mac (nothing like the trauma it would be on a PC ). 9.2 is a pretty good release and most new stuff coming out requires this as minimum.

Thanks Gareth... might give it a whirl for him then. Just spent the last hour installing some other 30-day trial that works on 9.x - NetBlocker or something. Seems OK, and very quiet compared with a PC firewall install and config.

Any idea if there is a cost implication of a 9.04 -> 9.2 upgrade by any chance?

Don't believe so - I think it's just a case of downloading and running the updater from the Apple support site. From memory you have to go to 9.1 first, then 9.2.

Thumbs up

pretty sure there is no cost, also gareth is right, probably need to go to 9.1 first then 9.2. I think 9.2.1 or 9.2.2 would be best.

Upgrading the Mac OS is extremely easy. Run the installer and that's it. None of your Windows nonsense...

As for your 'poor sod' quote, I hope you mess it all up for him

While we're all here I'm about to take the plunge and update my G3 iMac from OS 9.2.2 to OS 10.2.8 (or 10.3 if what they say is true).

Is it as simple as bunging in the CD and running an installer? Do all the existing apps get ring-fenced into Classic mode or are they accessible from the OS X desktop?

Cheers,
Gareth

10.3 out two weeks today. Preorder at apple.com If you buy 10.2 now, you can upgrade to 10.3 for around £14.99 using a voucher which you send to Apple.

Yes, your OS 9 apps run in Classic. It isn't too bad but once you get used to OS X native apps, you won't want to go back!

What spec is your iMac? You might want to add more RAM if you have less than 256Mb.

Thanks - my iMac has 384Mb on board. Should be okay?

The worst thing is the lack of screen resolution: the max 1024 x 768 is okay on the built-in screen but is pretty worthless on my Samsung 19"...

So OS X-aware apps like Photoshop 7 that I already have installed will run in Classic mode unless I re-install them?

Cheers,
Gareth

Poor sod? No I think he's seen the light and got out out of the grip of Microsoft. I'm hoping that my new laptop will be a Mac - can't wait personally.

Gareth,

384Mb should be fine as long as you don't do too much multitasking. OS X is a bit of a RAM hog when compared to OS 9. Photoshop may need to be reinstalled even though it is a Carbon application but check on that.

Alex

If memory serves me correclty the installer check which OS you have and istalls to OS9 o OSX vrsion. Could we wrong as its been a while since I installed this.

If you've not seen 10.3 id strongly advise taking a look at it. I saw it at Apple about 3 month ago and it looks awesome.

Apple have told us we will have stock on the 24/10/2003 but I'd not promise anything .

Re RAM i'd advise sticking in as much as you can especially with RAM being so cheap. I'm going to be sticking a 1Gb of RAM in my G4 cube and will be maxing out my G5 when I get it.

I'm still trying to find out if its optimised for 64bit processing via the G5 or not.
